It's fine over wifi. It's my dad's phone.
I know what you're thinking, his cell data is turned off? No. the internet, whatsapp are working.
Apparently there a was a big update the other day, so i can only put it down to this, i'm stumped.
Solved! Go to best answer.

Fixed it. I followed the guide here https://deviceguides.vodafone.co.uk/samsung/galaxy-a20e-android-9-0/connectivity/set-up-your-phone-f...
I would have expected it to not work at all with the wrong APN settings. Rather than with some apps and not others. And I can't imagine why why they've changed. Our why the guy in the shop didn't think of this.
I actually thought editing APN settings was a thing of the passed and it was all handled by carrier services these days.
ETA
The update was android 11

Hi @flagpole
Try the following
Go into Settings, apps , myvodafone, storage and clear cache. And if necessary clear data also.
If that does not help then try...
Clear your phone's System Cache Files by turning your phone Off and then from a set series of button presses go into the phone's System Files and clear the cache. No information is lost this way. You may need to insert your headphones or hook upto a computer with your data cable to get to this menu on the phone. https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/how-do-i-clear-the-cache-on-my-device/
Current Phone >
Samsung Galaxy s²⁴ Ultra 512gb.

So i was wrong before. it's actually just the very me section of the vodafone app that behaves as if it has no internet connection.
the guy in the shop uninstalled the whole app, (without checking that my dad knew how to reinstall it, he didn't btw) so i would assume that that would do all the things you describe?
Also the NHS app suffers the same fate when not on wifi???

Hi @flagpole!
You're right, APN settings should be normally added automatically when you set up the device, in most cases. If it were skipped somehow, that's the only logical explanation I can think of.
In any case, you've fixed it! Annoying how it's something so simple sometimes...
