The lollipop update is a backward step, battery life is now down to 8 hours from a previous 12+ and the device now has noticable lag. Is there a way top downgrade and didn't anyone test this before it was allowed out???

In the first instance, try a factory reset - don't forget to back up your content and make sure your contacts are sync'd first. Lollipop is a major update and needs a reset on some devices. That'll clear out any bits of the old code that are hanging round and confusing the system.

I have noticed over the past daay or so Google Play services using location services allot. I have changed to power saving settings ... somehow it changed back once on its own ... not sure why

It might be that something went wrong with the update process and the a re-flash will solve the problem. If you look at the Support tab on the Samsung website, you can see if there's a repair centre near you. If there is, ask if that's something they can do while you wait.
The other possibility is that you need to clear the system cache. If you hold Home and Volume Up, then press power, is there and option to reset and clear the cache? If so, that might be worth trying. You'll need to back up your content as before, of course.

I upgraded yesterday and had all these problems and really don't want to do a factory reset as it will take hours to get back to normal and I'll loose loads of app stuff probably.
So here's what I have done and it works great now.
Clear disk cache

Update to new version of play store that hasn't been sent out yet
(Removed according to House Rules)
Update to new version of Google Play Services not released yet. Make sure you use right version for your phone, see details of how to check on page

All that has really speeded up the phone now, seems much quicker than ever.
Initial signs also seem better on battery usage and temperature but time will tell on that one. Install GSam Battery Monitor from play store, great app for seeing what's happening.
Hope all that helps you too?

Updated firmware on GalaxyS5 to Lollipop and now my phone will not stay connected to available WIFI (even though it is strong signal) and is losing network/service with Vodafone. Also now because its constantly searching for WIFI it keeps going hot and shutting itself down - any ideas?

My S5 picked up the update a few weeks back and it did an inline update. Since then the phone seems to keep overheating, battery isn't even lasting a full day and various apps were crashing etc. so I did a full reset on it - wiped cache etc.
Since then the phone does seem more responsive but battery life, although better, still doesn't last a full day which is a pain as I am a business customer so need the phone to keep in touch with customers and suppliers from the time I leave the house to the walking back in through the door of an evening. I'm not always somewhere where I can charge the phone whilst travelling so this isn't ideal in any way whatsoever.
Performance since the reset is definately better and it doesn't seem to be running as hot either. I always go into the Developer options and turn off all of the animations and transistion effects anyway which I find helps regardless of the handset.
However, my biggest issue is the wireless - on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. I'm currently sat around 30cms from my router and the phone keeps dropping and reconnecting the wireless network. I've defaulted and reset the router, I've removed and re-added the wireless networks on the phone. Something is definately not right. What doesn't help even more is that I've been having signal issues since last Summer due to 'environmental issues in my arrea' so have to use a SureSignal box to get a reasonable connection. With the phone switching from wifi to mobile all the time my calls keep dropping and connecting.
