K3565 Dongle - Vista 32bit Business

All was working fine on my vista 32bit business laptop - happily browsing the internet on my pay as you go dongle.

Now when I connect I get "RAS Error 31"..

I have reinstalled software, delete modems and it still doesn't work.

I actually write web apps and software so I wouldn't consider myself an idiot user...but I cannot for the life of me get it to work.

My father had the same error message on his vodafone dongle - same model....

Is there a massive fault with them?

Hi tjbentley,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the eForum, it's always great to see new faces on here :).

I can definitely understand the frustration you must be feeling here as I could never be without my internet connection at home, luckily this is an error I've come across before so I'm sure I can I help get this back up and running for you :).

Error 31 is quite a generic error, it means that the port is disconnected, the reason it's disconnected could be for any one of a number of reasons ranging from a faulty device to a network issue. When it fails to connect have you noticed what colour the light on the modem is and how many times it's flashing? If it is a double green flash then it isn't finding a network.

I've had a look at the postcode in your profile using our Online Coverage Checker and our own internal system and can see that the coverage is not the best on 2G and 3G, is this the only place that you're using the modem?

Now, assuming everything is OK network-wise then we need to be looking at the laptop or the modem itself. If you're able to I'd try this in another laptop at a different location, if the same problem happens then we can safely say it's the modem causing the problem in which case details of what happens next can be found on our Repairs Thread.

If the modem works in another laptop then it may be the drivers causing the problem. I can see you've mentioned you deleted the modems, however was this from the devices list in VMC? If so then I'd try the following:

-Ensure the modem is plugged in and then close VMC fully (File > Close)
-Go to Start > Control Panel
-Double Click on Phone and Modem Options (you may need to click on classic view to find this)
-If you're asked for location info then fill this bit in
-Click on the modems tab
-Remove any instances of Huwaei modems
-Click on Add and let windows automatically detect the modem driver (if this gives you problems then simply unplug/plug in the modem)
-Reload VMC and try connecting again.

Let me know how you get on with the above :)
