Solution

K3565 Modem Not Self Installing

I have a Huawei K3565 prepay mobile internet dongle which was working fine on Vodafone UK.

Then I went to Germany and decided to buy a local German Vodafone internet USB stick, because the international roaming charges using the UK dongle are so high (£10 a day/per 50MB). The German dongle offered a week/up to 5GB for 9.95 euros.

The German dongle was a ZTE version of the K3565 (the K3565-Z). Cut a long story short, plugging the modem in did not cause much to happen - the microSD card never got listed, the modem was never installed, the mobile connect lite software was never installed. Despite several hours with the german support line and an hour with the helpful guy in the shop, including uninstalling the UK mobile connect lite software, downloading the full version (9.4), reinstalling all of the drivers for my Samsung N110 netbook, we never got it working, so they took it back and refunded my money.

Problem is that I am now back in the UK, and have uninstalled the full version of the VMC, but plugging the UK dongle back in it is not installing any software. The microSD card is listed, and in device manager the modem is showing as installed and working, but under "CD/DVD driver" the entry "Huawei mass storage USB device" has a yellow exclamation mark, and clicking properties it tells me "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)".

Any suggestions on how to fix it gratefully received. Thanks.

(All rather annoying that these two devices should have messed up so badly, given they are both from Vodafone. Of course, if the roaming charges were a bit more reasonable, I would not have had to look for another dongle in the first place...)

Hi Graham,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the eForum Family, it's always great to see new faces on here :).

Hmmm, this does sound like a rather frustrating issue, there's certainly some kind of conflict occurring, luckily I'm positive that it can be fixed :).

In order to fix this issue you'll effectively need to remove all Vodafone software, drivers and connections and then effectively start again from scratch. I notice that you've already removed VMC, I'd also recommend checking for any software that may have been installed by the German modem.

Once you've checked this you'll need to remove all of the device drivers from device manager the ones you need to remove are under CD/DVD, Ports, Modems and then the USB mass storage and USB composite in Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Finally, I'd advise removing the Vodafone connection by going to the Control Panel and then Network and Sharing Centre, simply delete the VMC dialup connection. Simply restart the PC and then try the modem again.

Let me know how you get on with that :).

George, Thanks for your suggestions.

I have tried everything you suggest:
- there is no software related to the dongle (UK or German) listed in the program list to uninstall- I think I have uninstalled everything.
- I have unistalled every device which might be associated with the dongle (DVD/CD-ROM drive, modem, port, usb composite drive, usb mass storage device)
- I have deleted the modem and the VMC dial up profile
- I have even uninstalled (and reinstalled) my graphics driver and the USB host controller and USB root hub driver

I've robooted (twice) and reinserted the dongle - not much happens except the DVD-CD-ROM device and USB composite device show up in device manager again. The compsosite device seems installed and reporting that it is ok (although presumably it isn't really), the CD-ROM device "HUAWEI mass storage USB device" has a yellow exclamation mark and reports "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)". I'm not getting the microSD card slot listed as a drive in explorer any more.

The current driver file for the device is reported as follows:
Microsoft, date 01/07/2001, version 5.1.2535.0.

There seem to be two problems - this drive is not getting installed properly, and so VMC Lite is not getting installed, but also the modem is not being recognised or installed at all.

Any more ideas please?

Hi Graham

Curious indeed !!!!!

Can you please try downloading the full VMC version from the Vodafone Business Site, (I've linked to it).

having done that please can you do the following:

1. Unplug modem

2, Control panel (via Start)

3. Phone and Modems

4. Modems

5. Advanced tab

6. Remove any instances of Huwei or Globetrotter references

7. Ok, and exit

8. restart computer then insert modem again :)

Please let me know how you get on.

Thanks

OK, I downloaded and installed VMC.

In Control Panel / Phones and modems, I have a "modems" tab and an "advanced tab" - there is no advanced tab subset of the modems tab.

On the modem tab there is nothing listed (the list is empty) and the only button which is not greyed out is the "add..." button. On the "Advanced tab" there are several things listed but I don't know what any of them are (eg "Microsoft H.323 Telephony Service Provider", "Microsoft HID Phone TSP" etc). None of them mention Huawei or Globetrotter.

Anyway I then inserted the modem dongle. Initially seemed to go well - it recognised and installed the modem. Then the familiar "Your hardware was installed but may not work properly" message was shown. Looking at Device Manager, it is listed as installed and correctly working:
- Vodafone Mobile Boradband Modem (Huawei)
- Vodafone Mobile Broadband Secondary Port Modem (Huawei) (COM5)
- USB Composite Device
- USB Mass Storage Device

However, I still have a yellow exclamation mark beside the DVD/CD-ROM drives entry "HUAWEI Mass Storage USB Device" - clicking properties it still reports "Windows has successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)."

Anyway, I thought maybe this doesn't matter - I do not need the software to install because I have already installed VMC!

So I loaded VMC, and it found the mobile device and listed "Vodafone UK GPRS" network as available.

I clicked on connect, and it came back with this error:
"Mobile connection not possible.

- Set your current mobile device as the defaul device in the 'Manage Devices' view.
- Ensure that no other programs are using your mobile device and try again in a short while
- Delete the device in the 'Manage Devices' view, add it back again and then try connecting.

If this error persists, please contact Support at your mobile network operator.

Support information:
RAS error code 619"

I tried to delete the device but it reports "Device is in use. The device you want to remove is currently in use. Close any connections that are open and try again". But VMC is the only application which is open.

Any more ideas?

Graham

Hi Graham D,

This does sound unfortunate, and as we're not Microsoft Accredited, I'm hesitant to suggest beyond what you've already investigated. The two things I would suggest are firstly:

- try the modem in another computer. If it's faulty, we can get this repaired.

- At your own risk look at your Services (run > services) to see if the obvious have been disabled - telephony, remote routing access manager, and networking are the big three I find are disabled randomly. They should all be set to ENABLED, but be sure to have a system restore point setup, just in case.

Beyond this, I'm afraid I'm not sure what else to suggest - perhaps enlisting the help of a computer specialist for a hands-on diagnosis might be the way out of this. Please keep us updated as any info you can provide might be spotted by another forum user who has experienced this type of issue before.

I tried installing the modem on another laptop - it worked fine, first time. Unfortunately that is a very old laptop with zero battery life so not very helpful to have 3g broadband on it!

I looked at the services you mentioned and they all seem to be running, so this does not seem to be the answer either.

Does VMC (and my prepay account) work with any other modem that I could purchase somehow? (I suspect that the problem is specific to the K3565 model) Or would "unbranding" the modem and using it with another front end potentially get it working?

All I want is to be able to surf the net when I'm out and about! Doesn't seem much to ask given it was working fine three weeks ago and all I have done is try to install a second Vodafone modem...

Unfortunately I believe we only have the one model of this type of Top Up and Go modem, and all the others are configured for different access points and network settings, so would be a bit of a hassle.

Is there any chance you have a System Restore point on your PC from before the German modem was installed that you can roll back to?

Hi

Please kindly post ZTE K3565-Z Original Connection Manager (VM Lite) to enable me install my modem Manually. During installation the setup keeps on rolling back at some particular point and cant figure it out what cause this. Thanks in Advance.
