Anybody else getting an update notification for a 149Mb update for the S3 thats failing on installation? Update came up on my wife S3 this evening and fails everytime at around 27%. Update not showing (yet) on my S3. PS can't use Kies as don't have a Windows PC, but also should not need to use Kies as Andriod supports OTA....
What is the update? Is it me or are Samsung and/or Vodafone a bit poor or maybe even shocking bad at updates in the last 18 months we've had at least 2 full updates which caused issues, various other updates that give you no clue as to what they are. So the customer and owner of the phone does not know what they are installing and what it may be doing to our phones or data.... Last update for me forces me to use Samsung's in built and annoying calendar app.... Argh.... These companies really need start putting the customer first rather than whatever handset locking or other things they seem to be doing, that way customers would not want to leave them in the first place!
Any help or info re this update issue appreciated....

Hi there
For larger upgrades, it is always much better to use Kies despite it not being the greatest piece of software Samsung have churned out. OTA updates aren't the most reliable I'm afraid and you are always safer using Kies as it gives you the option to roll back an update. It may be an idea to see if you can find someone with a PC that you can use to install Kies and update your phone.
I'm afraid that you are pointing fingers at the wrong people here. It is Samsung who are responsible for the updates, and also for rolling them out - not Vodafone. Vodafone only approve the update for use on their network and put various apps and bookmarks in as part of the customisation which also includes network specific settings.
You can also take a look at Sammobile for the details of the update and also alternative ways to install it.

What do you mean when you say the update forced you to use Samsung's calendar app. Forced you in what way? I've always used 3rd part calendar apps and nothing has ever forced me to stop - indeed that is against the choice that Android always gives its users.

I recently updated an S2 from Gingerbread to Jellybean. It went through every stage in between and some of them sat on about 27% or so for quite a long time but moved on eventually. I did the whole process OTA, but over wifi - it is sticking on the download or installation phase, btw?
You can certainly use any calendar app you want - I have both the native one and Google's on one of my devices. I actually like the Samsung one as it's the only one I've found that give a more Outlook-like display, with entry details showing more prominently than some, which just use an almost invisible dot in the month view.

Be aware that that there is no update now for the S3
The one rolling out may lock your phone down all previouse update did not
as we do not No what is on this update as Vodafone do not tell there users it is done at your own risk
so if it removes stuff then there is nothing you can do
Samsung told me that this update was a Vodafone only one for there Handsets
If Vodafone want there users to update there hand sets they need to tell them what is on this so Customer can make a choice as it is there hand sets after all

I took this OTA update last night and it seems to have installed correctly. Not sure what's been added/removed but the build number is now JSS15J.I9300XXUGNA5. I was previously on JSS15J.I9300XXUGMK6.
