Thanks for your reply, have tried the reboot, checked the mute button, blown the dust out of the charger port.
Is the next solution to take it in to an Apple shop - do you know how much they charge for diagnostics? (I am on a pay monthky contract with vodafone)

If you are able to get to an Apple store that is your best bet, it will be a lot quicker and probably a lot cheaper than going down the Vodafone repair route.
