I keep getting the SIM Card Full delete some messages but as far as I am aware the SIM card isn't full.  At one time I have seen the figure of 50 messages as the limit. 

Can I alter this or get the messaging system onto the SD card

You cant increase the capacity of the SIM Card @-pete-

 

On my Samsung Galaxy s8 I prefer not to save Sms texts to my sim card. 

 

I use the phones internal storage. 

 

Then either delete them or screen shot any important ones and then save them to my Sd Card or Dropbox.

There should be an option to choose SIM or phone storage in Settings, but I don't think that saving to the sd card will be possible.   I've had devices (older ones) that operate on a last-in-first-out basis and others that require manual deletion from time to time.   It's possible (if you're lucky) that internal storage will function this way.   If not, you'll still need to do manual housekeeping from time to time.  SIMs are very limited in their storage.
