Unable to use Torch 9800 as modem from laptop - fails to start PPP

Torch 9800 latest OS

BB Desktop Manager 7.1 on Windows 7 via USB

BB on vodafone UK contract

Tried both BB desktop and via 'dial-up networking' - both give PPP error - specifically on dial-up gives error code 734.

tried web/web internet, web/web access.internet, wap/wap internet and tried with different settings on IP header compression. IPV6 not enabled.

Any ideas?  Would really like this to work as going away to somewhere with no internet!
