Purely conjecture but I can only assume from my personal experience that it would look something like this:
Step 1: Automatically sign people up to a service they neither need, want or consent to.
Step 2: When customer receives their phone and immediately opt's out of the parental lock and unwanted "Secure Net" service - simply ignore this and turn it back on. If anyone asks say the account must have got confused when they carried over their old phone number.
Step 3: When customer tries to log-in to Vodafone on their mobile make the log-in screen hang and then crash constantly until they give in and decide it's not worth the trouble for a mere £1.
Step 4: When customer tries to persevere at a later date, hits the same Step 3 problem, and attempts to log-in on their desktop - make it pop up the error message "cmd-2 email not recognised" repeatedly (or similar). Sooner or later they will again give up in frustration.
Step 5: Never provide an email address, it's too convenient to complain, the awkwardness of getting through the telephone robots and trying to remember passwords they haven't used in 3 months will add another firewall of difficulty, that will cause all but the most stouthearted to remember it's only £1 it's not really worth the 30 minutes of their life needed to cancel it.
Step 6: Profit (and ignore the myriad of negative associations you have just manifested around your brand in the consumers mind, totes worth £12 a year)

@laffmatth You can opt out of Secure Net via the My Vodafone app.
On the My Vodafone app go to, Offers & extras > Buy extras > Mobile data options > Vodafone Secure Net, where you'll have the option to opt out.
If you're having issues with your My Vodafone app please contact our dedicated Live Chat team - they'll also be able to opt you out of the Secure Net service.
Please let us know how you get on.
