Hi, I had this problem a while ago and it was linked to Picasa on the google account.
This is what I had to do to stop it.
Go to Settings > Accounts
Select your Google account, then tap on your Google account name to change your sync settings.
Scroll down to the bottom and uncheck the Sync Picasa Web albums option.
Go back into Settings > Application Manager or Apps or Applications. This will depend on your Android configuration and version.
Go to Applications > All
Scroll down and find Gallery and select it.
Tap on both the Clear Data and Clear Cache options. This will reset the cache and also clear the previously synced Picasa web albums from the Gallery app.
Go back to your Gallery app. You will notice that just your local photos and videos are listed.
hopefully this will sort it.

If your photos are sync with Google, there's a chance they're re-syncng before you can get to both locations. Try turning the sync off, then doing the delete. Any good? I don't know as I use Dropbox and that definitely only syncs one way.
