I've just had to replace my battery for my s3.... apparently the old one had blown...what does that mean, and why did it happen?

Sounds like it could be a number of things from a faulty battery, hardware or even an overload from the charger. If you're still concerned it might be worth taking the handset to a local Vodafone retail store where they can arrange for a repair / full diagnostics on the handset.

Everything seems ok now I've replaced the battery.... think the battery was the issue.

It sounds as though the issue with faulty batteries that was prevalent a while back is recurring.  Is it new, or is it some batteries taking longer to fail   When the forum team pick up your post, respond to them and ask if they're still reimbursing the cost of replacements.   If not, you may find that Samsung will.
