pay as you go sims

Hi, I would like a pay as you go sim to put in an old iPhone (currently locked to vodafone) so that my son can use it. He probably won't use it much so I need a sim that I can load up and then only top up when he's used the credit (perhaps 2 or 3 times a year). Does anyone know if vodafone do such a product? I have been lead to believe that even on pay as you go sims, unused credit gets wiped out at the end of the month, meaning that you have to top up monthly. That doesn't sound like pay as you go to me. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There's some information on how the Big Value bundles work over on this thread here

If Vodafone's SIM deals on pay as you go aren't suitable to your needs then you could always unlock the phone and try another provider. If you need to unlock then there's more help here

Hi @CIA73

If you only want to keep a small amount of credit on the phone to take care of the occasional call and text, you would probably be bettter off just getting the free SIM and topping up when you receive the SIM.

There is further information for you to explain how to get the free SIM on the link below.

Vodafone Free PAYG SIM

If you are going to purchase a bundle, the £10.00 Freebee is quite a reasonable offer, this will enable your Son to receive a choice of a free calling allowance of 150 minutes, unlimited texts or an internet allowance of 500 mb for 30 days and keep the £10.00 credit to use as he wanted paying the out of bundle charges for PAYG.  You can find the out of bundle charges on the link below.

Vodafone Support - Call Charges

PAYG top credit does not expire, the only thing your Son will need to do is to keep the SIM active making the occasional chargeable activity.

Hope this helps.

@CIA73

It would take the £20 Freebie Texts to get unlimited texts for the first month. But I think that the Freebie Minutes would probably be your better bet, simply because minutes at full price cost a minimum of 30p (30p per minute or part minute), while a standard text is only 14p.

But a Big Value Bundle wouldn't be suitable for the use you describe, as the top up is used to buy the product, which only lasts 30 days. Be careful when ordering a SIM to select the one you definitely want, as otherwise the default option of a Big Value Bundle SIM is the one that is sent out.

Thanks all. Turns out they do do a sim of the sort I was after. It will inevitably cost more on a text by text / minute by minute basis but may work out better in the long run if it doesn't get much use. Will probably switch to the bundle if he gets carried away!
