So try going into Settings > Accounts > Google > your account name and check to see if the syncing is enabled there.
Have you checked the settings in the Email app itself and made sure that it is still set to sync your emails and notify you when they arrive. Make sure the sync settings are set to "push" so that you automatically get notified when your emails come through.

Brilliant.
As a matter of interest, there is actually a specific Gmail app - you may want to take a look at that as I personally find it easier to use, configure and gives a bit more functionality. I feel that the specific email apps work better than the bog standard one.
