unlock pin on s3 mini that has broken screen

I dropped and broke the LCD on my phone and would like to know if anyone knows how to get past the pin entry screen (when you cannot see the display) in order to try and get the phone to connect via Kies to y laptop to rescue the phone contacts and calendar entries.

Short of paying to have the screen repaired is there a way to get past the pin entry stage blind so that hopefully kies then works.
