Landline phone with own router on FTTP

bruce_miranda

Just got FTTP and everything is working fine off the VF router. Phone lines are plugged into the VF router, VF router's WiFi is switched off. 3rd party Mesh has been switched to Bridge mode and plugged into the VF's ethernet port.

However I am shocked at how feature poor the VF router is. e.g. There are no Parental controls at all. I know I can get rid of the VF router and plug my own Mesh router into the Openreach ONT, but what about the Landline.

Are there any 3rd party routers in the market that have a telephone socket at the back to allow the home phone to be plugged in?

I know it is probably not much help but I am in a similar situation. I can make calls to mobiles but not fixed line or national rate numbers such as 0800 or 03452 for example. Has anyone resolved this I wonder?

Hi @Luciftian,

Just an FYI to add really. I updated to your Grandstream default dial plan and all works as before but still no access to national rate numbers

@Xjacko Hi, I tried to post a full reply but the system keeps on marking it as spam.
I have finally got it all working.
Remove the static IP address from "Use NAT IP" in the GrandStream configuration and enable SIP ALG on the router (I don't have anything else forwarded or modified on the router, just a static IP for the ATA box).
I also set "Enable SIP OPTIONS/NOTIFY Keep-alive to “OPTIONS”, and followed the set up by Clayface in another forum (everything else is back to default settings).

This is a screengrab of my full settings on the ATA.

Hello again @Luciftian,

Many thanks for the update. I just deleted the static IP from my settings and it seems to have worked fine. I have tested on national rate numbers and they are working now. I am unsure about the rest you have adopted but as they say... if it aint broke don't fix it. Thanks very much for getting to the bottom of this.

@Xjacko Glad it worked.

I just went back to basics, starting with this post from ClayFace in the GrandStream forums (he is the one who originally cracked it and posted the settings on github).
I went back to the default settings on my HT-812 and just made the changes suggested by ClayFace.

1) As I could not find a way to forward the Vodafone subnet on my router to the local IP of my HT812 (I could only forward ports and I did not know which type of service to specify for VoIP), I set the "Enable SIP OPTIONS/NOTIFY Keep-alive to “OPTIONS”.

2) I got a static IP from Vodafone BUT although I could make and receive calls from landlines (national and international) and mobile phones, I could NOT make any calls to any non-geographic numbers.
The only way to fix this was NOT to use the “Use NAT IP” option and enable the SIP ALG on my router.
Once I did that, everything is working fine.

So, to summarise, this is what I did to use my own router (tp-link archer 400) and ATA box (Grandstream HT-812) for VoIP calls on Vodafone (BT OpenReach) full fibre:

1) Enable SIP ALG on the router (Advanced tab -> Nat Forwarding -> ALG)

2) configure the Grandstream profile as follows:

          Primary SIP server: resvoip.vodafone.co.uk
          Prefer Primary SIP Server: yes
Outbound proxy: xxx.xx.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk (as provided by vodafone)
Sip user ID: voixxxxxxxxxx (as provided by vodafone)
Authenticate ID: voixxxxxxxxxx (as provided by vodafone)
Authenticate password: ******** (as provided by vodafone)
          DNS mode: SRV
          Register expiration: 60 minutes
          Register before expiration: 15 seconds
          Enable SIP Options/Notify Keep-alive: Options
          Local SIP port: 5065
          Local RTP port: 10000
Remove OBP from route header: Yes
          SIP User-Agent: Vox 3.0
          Enable 100rel: Yes
Add Auth header on initial REGISTER: Yes
          Preferred vocoder: Choice 1: PCMA
          Preferred vocoder: Choice 2-8: G729
          SLIC Setting: UK
Caller ID Scheme: SIN 227 – BT
          OnHook DC Feed Current: 20mA

Leave all other fields as per their default setting.
As we were getting spam IP calls (SPIT) from numbers like 10001, 1001, 100, 11, I disabled direct IP calls:
Check SIP User ID for incoming INVITE: Yes (no direct IP calling if Yes)
Allow Incoming SIP Messages: Yes (no direct IP calling if Yes)

This is a screengrab of my full settings on the GrandStream HT-812.

I hope it all continues to work for both of us 🙂

Spot on @Luciftian,

I am sure the information and shared screenshots will be of use to many others also. Thanks again.

Hey Folks, it good to read many have got this working. I have got all the details from VF, but I don't have a static IP. I have purchased the HT801. Instead of the using VFs router, I have been using a Draytek Vigor 130 Model with a Ubiquiti UniFi USG for the last 4 years. I have tried different settings posted here, but it still fails to Register. It sounds like most of you are quite savvy with these things and help would be greatly appreciated.

@shamrock99 Do contact Vodafone and get them to give you a static IP, it takes a few days and it is free.

I just managed to make it all work, I have detailed everything in my previous post, but do note that my fibre is supplied by BT OpenReach. It takes one setting out of place and it won't work. BTW I didn't open or forward any ports on my router, all I did is enable SIP ALG, as detailed in my post.

You shouldn't need a static IP. You can set "NAT traversal" to "STUN".
