Not being able to keep our existing landline number when upgrading to a digital contract

We want to keep our landline number after upgrading to a digital contract. We have had this number for the last 30: years, and have been with Vodafone for landline and broadband etc for about 5 years.   All was well with processing an upgrade until the Vodafone assistant told me we would need a new landline number as they could not retain our existing number.  They just said the new infrastructures meant they couldn’t keep it. Has anyone else come across this or got an idea of how we can get round this?  We have decided not to upgrade and possibly change providers and see what happens when the  old lines are discontinued in 2025.

We are not changing supplier as we are already with Vodafone.

But it will still require to be moved from the PSTN to VoIP.
