Data abroad - O2 admit to throttling data...

I have been following threads on this forum recently where people have reported either problems getting a 4G signal whilst abroad or have been experiencing problems with the speed of the data believing it to be throttled.

I was therefore really surprised to read this thread on the O2 UK forum where a user had reported significantly slow speeds whilst using their service aborad, if you read through the thread then you see a lot of people had the same experience.

The reason why I thought it was worth sharing here is due to the fact that there have been some of the same kinds of experiences reported here but the good news is, from the people doing speed tests on the other thread, Vodafone are coming out on top.

This basically gives me hope that there's no policy (as I'd suspected) to restrict the Vodafone service whilst roaming in Europe which I had been worried about.

We had customers reporting their roaming experience had significantly been affected since the June changes however Vodafone did come forward on a another thread and admit there'd been a problem and that this was now resolved.

Therefore I'd encourage anyone still experiencing problems with 4G abroad or roaming data speeds to continue to report them to Vodafone so they can resolve the issues.

What is also interesting from the O2 thread is the fact that the OFCOM response makes it clear that networks are being non-compliant by restricting consumption and also that it's not appropriate to blame the foreign networks for performance issues which was the case when a Vodafone UK customer complained about data speeds on Vodafone IT. Even when the user pointed out he also had a Vodafone IT sim card that worked perfectly, we still went with blaming them.

But getting back to a good news message, it does look like Vodafone are the only ones getting roaming right which is one of the reasons I came back so soon after leaving. I'll be in Greece and Cyprus at the end of next week and really look forward to using my (unrestricted) roaming service whilst there :smileyhappy:

I've certainly roamed abroad a number of times this year - france, netherlands, germany, usa, canada - and vodafone has been pretty consistently good, another benefit is having 4G roaming means access to a better local network often (faster/more capacity/maybe better coverage).

It's also one of the reasons I switched
