My original number is still in my head despite several number changes over the years. Can I check if it is in use and if it isnt .. can I retrieve it please.

The best way to see if the number has been re issued is to ring it and see if someone answers.
Typically if a mobile number has been de activated and then quarantined to re issue at a later date then a person has 90 days to ask for it back.
I appreciate your timeframe is quite a way after that
Unfortunately after that timeframe it's a slim chance of regaining ownership @ChrisPD
That said you could ask customer services or the Vodafone Social Media Team's via Twitter DM or Facebook Messenger to clarify officially if there is a chance at all.
