IPv6 rollout

ipv6-seeker

I have seen reports on the internet that Vodafone is rolling out IPv6 in 2020 (but probably delayed by Covid-19). My router has received the latest firmware update and now shows IPv6 settings. Does anyone know what the roadmap for IPv6 looks like? No official statement on Vodafone website. I'm very glad the internet isn't deteriorating into a spiderweb mess of CG-NAT (how many layers could it f****** go!?!). I'm in London. Thanks

That can't be true. There are loads of Xbox users on here.

Xbox support says:

Your Xbox works normally without IPv6 connectivity. However, for the best possible experience, we recommend enabling IPv6 on your network. Several Xbox features already make use of IPv6, and we're building more.

There is nothing on the xbox that is exclusively Ipv6, so lack of Ipv6 is a non-issue.

To put it simply, no manufacturer would push themselves out of the market. Ipv6 still has a long way to go before making a real impact. eg, teredo is dead. Vodafone have 8 million broadband clients in the UK, xbox can't force anything.

Microsoft Xbox support appear to disagree.

It seems to be necessary for some new features. Existing and developing.

Making use of IPv6 likely refers to those services having IPv6 connectivity and operating as Dual Stack. IPv4 will still be around for some time and it's unlikey that any service (expecially one as large as Xbox) would swith to IPv6 only. It's well documented that IPv6 is more performant, therefore if an 'Xbox feature' has IPv6 connectivity, it would be expected that having a native IPv6 connection on your Xbox console would offer the 'best possible experience'.

I don't think the support staff are being deceptive, however it seems the front-line support staff don't really understand what IPv6 is and are just refering to some Microsoft IPv6 marketing.

Not the same thing at all. "Make use of" does not mean required.

Your whole statement is nonsense.

Are we there yet?                           no

It feels like the great escape, having to tunnel out to get IPv6 - which we should already have.

Stuck in the IPv4 "Cooler!"

@Pixil8 Not yet.

Any announcement should be in here https://www.vodafone.co.uk/newscentre/

Damn, what IPv6 had we been missing out on and never noticed????   I have IPv6 now from BT, and could previously tunnel out if needed (messes up Instagram though), but I'd never been shouted at because something on XBox wasn't working thanks to no IPv6!

FYI, BT's implementation of IPv6 does look very much like it's designed for IPv4 CGNAT & IPv6 dual stack!  So if that's how it works it'll not be great.

I've used Microsoft Direct Access to connect to work's IP6 cloud stuff, but other than that have never seen the need. It'll come eventually I expect but I would not be surprised if for many it will be IP4 LAN and IP6 WAN for a while until the majority of devices on the LAN can actually do IP6.
