THG3000 Modem only mode - need recommendations

I have just had my Gigafast 500 line installed and Vodafone have sent me a THG3000 modem/router, which I am unable to set to modem-only mode to use with PFSense. Scouring the forums, I can see that others have had this same issue with this model too. The bottom line, from what I've read so far, is that it's not possible to set this particular model to modem-only mode?

From what I've also gathered, I'll need to buy a third-party modem, and the Draytek 130 keeps coming up in searches, but I'm not sure if this will be suitable for FTTP connections? Are there any other suitable modems I could look at buying? I don't need WiFi or anything, although I suppose most models already come with built-in WiFi - which is fine - but I have my existing UniFi APs I want to use... Basically, I'm just after a modem which will work with my Gigafast 500 connection and that I can connect to my PFSense box, and looking for recommendations really...

Any help would be appreciated...

Edit 1: I forgot to mention that I also have a telephone line with VF, so i'd need a recommendation for a modem that I can connect my telephone into.

You don't need a modem with FTTP. I don't know the PFSense but it should be able to connect direct to the fibre box (ONT?) Possibly you could connect the THG300O to a lan port on the PFSense to use the phone.

I haven't heard of anybody able to use the Vodafone VOIP phone service except with the THG3000.

Yes, I believe you are correct. Further Googling has led me to other forums where people have said that you shouldn't need a separate modem - apparently the ONT will connect directly to my PFSense box. I've received my username/password and VLAN tag so I guess it's just a case of trying it and keeping my fingers crossed.

If there's no way to use the VOIP service without the THG3000, I wonder if there's a way to connect the THG3000 to my existing network and use it for VOIP only - unless you know of a better method?

That's what I was suggesting when I said to connect it to the PFSense lan.

Obviously it will be running with a local IP from the PFSense and I don't know enough about VOIP protocols to say if it will work. The only way to find out will be to try. Do let us know how you get on.

You could go for a 3rd party VOIP solution, but that would be extra cost. Hopefully someday Vodafone may release the details to enable people to use the service they are already paying for.

I need to learn to read replies more thoroughly - I completely missed your suggestion 😄

Thanks for your input, and if anyone else reading this thread has anything to add, I'm sure it would help not only myself, but others with a similar intention. I'll definitely be experimenting and will post the outcome on here.

Did you ever get the it running on the PFsense lan?
