3g Usb Ras Error 633 On Windows 7 Laptop

hello there (and a late merry christmas!)

i am a vodafone customer in austria (using A1 carrier) but decided to post my problem here in this forum since the people here seem to really know how to solve problems, as opposed to the domestic IT support...

i've been using a Huawei E160 3g stick with windows 7 for weeks now -- without any problems, until recently I couldn't connect anymore. (always getting the RAS error code 633).

since i wasn't obviously the first one to experience this annoyance i searched forums and followed any advice that was given in this thread: http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=27107

unfortunately none of this worked in my case. i even deactivated *any* other modem on my computer, tried to uninstall any program that might cause a port blocking of some kind (e.g. TeamViewer) -- all with the same result: RAS error 633.

I've tried starting all the necessary services, updating drivers, VMC and windows, deactivating other connections, uninstalling applications... so any help from your side would be much appreciated.

thank you in advance.

ps: why does this kind of problems always arises around christmas when it's had to reach any kind of technical support ;)

Hi The Phil,

First of all let me be the one to welcome you to the eForum at this festive time of year.

Thank you for already checking out potential fixes on the RAS 633 error, this will save us both a bit of time.

That error normally means that there is probably a conflict with the 3g modem. Could you please have a look at device manager? Go to start, run, remove whatever's in the field and type in 'devmgmt.msc', enter. Device manager will appear - check for any conflicts under modems, and 'ports and coms'.

Please let us know how you go on with this as I am sure we can get this sorted for you and I must say it's nice to hear some positive comment s relating to our resolution success. ^_^

Hope you have a great Christmas and a happy new year. :D

Many thanks

Hello Andrew!

Thank you very much for getting back to me that quickly, moreover around this time of year. I am already delighted by the quality of service at Vodafone UK!

Back to the problem:

I've tried out various COM-ports of the modem, but set it back to COM4 after tampering around with the settings (screenshot #1).

I reckon COM4 is the best setting (and didn't cause any conflicts at any time either), since in the connection that VMC creates the modem is always (?) set to COM4 (see screenshot #2)

I hope this helps you a bit closing in on the heart of my problem.

Hi Phil

Have a look at this thread :)

The error sits within the o/s of your laptop and not the modem itself.

We have tested the E160 with WIN7 and got it going ok. We were using vmcc version V9.3.6.12095. The lateset version is 9.4.4.
Have a look at what version you have,

Visit the Windows7 portion of our website.

Any kind of WIN7 auto update may have caused the problem.

The problem we have is that we have no information about your sim card here in the UK so our diagnostics are slightly inhibited.

Have a look at the A1 e160 help site :)

Hi Albert!

Thanks for your help, although I already know the sites your links point me to.

Today I've tried out a different Huawei USB modem from a different carrier with different software and, guess what: Error 633. In my despair I even hooked up my HTC Magic cell to my laptop, downloaded some modem software and again: Error 633.

I can now say with certainty that it has something to do with one of the latest Windows 7 updates, just as you suggested yourself. LAN & WLAN work without problems but as soon as a USB modem is involved I get the dreaded error.

So my only hope is that Microsoft is aware of this problem and supplies me (or 'us', I can't believe I am the only one) with a hot-fix and/or thorough patch in the next update.

Again: Thanks for your help -- much appreciated! :D
