Hi everyone,
I am looking for some advice. I've used Android for years across many mobiles but my last two handsets (HTC M8 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4) have encountered issues with software updates introducing issues:
Has anyone else found this? Are there any solutions? Does this happen on IOS on Apple iPhones?
Thank you,
Mark

Whenever an OS gets updated there are always reports of a poorer battery life and some of the other things you've mentioned. The models you've quoted, M8 and Note 4, are relatively older phones now and perhaps they aren't really suitable for the update versions of Android.
I have been using iPhones now for 3 years or so and have never encountered an issue with iOS updates, and I;m not aware of any large scale reports of issues when iOS is updated. iOS is different to Android is it is a single version for every iPhone and Apple controls everything from end to end. The so-called fragmentation of Android doesn't exist in the Apple eco-system and most iPhones will not be using the latest version of iOS.

Thanks, JeffKinn. I'm on the Note 4 at the moment and it has been with the last couple of softwafe updates that I have experienced the problems I also had with my previous HTC handset, 14 months into the contract. Are Apple more reliable handsets?

I have an S7 EDGE and have reported within 2 days of the update I posted my battery is worse off
But what I've learnt is straight after the update my battery consumption goes through the roof Joe then settles as the update beds in and after I've used all the apps on my phone and after a week my battery life improves some days now I can get between 10 and 14 screen on time
But I have read endless pages on how to optimise and get the best out of it
And just to add I have I gear fit 2 which is constantly on via Bluetooth and I also use mobile data exclusively
But I do keep my brightness down to as low as I can with out straining.
It would be worth having a search on here in the search bar typing in different phrased about battery, battery usage, battery draining
And same around the web
Before I read up at one point my to screen on time was 6 hours 50 minutes
Because I remember monitoring it from then on
Using using that as a reference
If your like me the bit I can not get my head around is why my device has 4 or 5 Microsoft apps that I will NEVER REPEAT NEVER use I won't even activate them to see what they are like Ive found once you start it never stops so I keep them updated For security but won't use them same as hangouts that's cooked into my device with no use to me
I just feel i should be able to choose what I have running on my device end I also feel that even though I don't use them my device would run better without them
Another point if you look at them on the play store you find you have to pay for the juicy bits any way.
Can any one answer that by the way about why those apps are there and there to stay
If it it just down to dollar signs it's out of order the wealth that company has it unnecessary yes put them on there a bit of marketing but at least if I'm not going use it give me the option to uninstall
I just can't get my head around it
Sorry I went off on a waffle there

What Microsoft apps do you have that you can't get rid of?

Sorry for late reply
It's the cooked in ones that came pre-installed POWER POINT, EXEL, ONE DRIVE, AND WORD, and ONE NOTE,
You can uninstall the updates but I feel that will leave my device vulnerable as the last few weeks these apps have been updating like crazy each one minimum 50 mb
Now 50mb is not a lot but times 5 and I think one of them was 83 mb it was about 500mb for the lot.
but it was within days of each other and when you rely on mobile data as I do it's a chunk of data I could of used elsewhere
Hangouts is another one that I'll never use but can only uninstall updates so they are cooked into the device OS itself
Not major issues I know but give me my device and if I have no use for them let me uninstall that way they have some marketing awareness about the app and also an happy customer who can use his hers device to it's full potential
One more whilst I'm at it I did use upday for the first few weeks although it's just revamped flip board it was interesting until I saw it sent my data usage through the roof
And even though I have turned it off it is still chewing data a months later although very little it's still using my devices resources that could be used elsewhere
And while I'm at it these devices are marketed as having 4 gig ram but when I installed about phone for some info it said I have maximum ram of 3.5 gig but that could mean 500mb is reserved for breathing space
And the 32 gig internal memory was a huge shock can not remember what it was but it was nowhere near 25 gig I allowed 7 gig for the operating system but still a shock
Just to note it's only been the last few months for me this android obsession so I'm a late starter and I also wanted to avoid all the mistakes I made with my previous S5
Of which I am convinced disabling apps I wasn't using caused my device problems that could never be fully rectified.
But that device was full to the brim with bloat so the silver lining here at least this as only the micro soft and hangouts maybe 1 or 2 more but no were near the S5
I better stop waffling😇✌

Microsoft is continually updating its apps for both Android and iOS. There is nothing to worry about and they can't do any harm to your phone or use any data if you don't use them.
Hangouts is an essential element of the Android/Google offering and you won't be able to delete it. Again, just don't use it if you don't want to.
Surely you can stop apps updating when not on Wi Fi. Also can you not control which apps are allowed to sue mobile data and which ones have to use Wi Fi. With iOS, an app update simply won't update using mobile data if the file exceeds 100mb even if you want it to. I can manually select which apps are allowed to use mobile data and which aren't.

Thanks for that I wasn't aware that hangouts was as required as much as you mention for the device to function as you say.
Looking at it that way it's a good job it can not be uninstalled as I would of crashed my phone and probably would of had satellites raining down in my garden
You learn something new every day

I said offering and not operating system. It doesn't affect the way Android operates but it's a key part of the Google eco-system and thus they will push it at you. As it happens I use Hangouts quite a lot and have happily installed it on my iPhone.

I've just used Google assistant and ended up on wiki about hangouts and at one part Google announced in January 2016 it was discouraging users from using it as an sms app and from what I've just read it doesn't get any better
So that's when they released Google allo and another one that's just disappeared from my memory but I have only had this device 4 months yet they issued that statement January 2016
I still need to do some more reading but the first few pages have discouraged me more from using it to see if it has any thing to offer
The bit that caught my interest was free video calls and only uses data of which if it is possible I would expect a huge data usage spike but that info page doesn't fill me with confidence
