Asus EEE PC 701 netbook - XP

karenlw
Not applicable
I have just purchased an Asus Eee PC netbook running Windows XP and have been trying to install vodaphone VMC without any success.

I get an error screen with numerous error messages including: "System: BadImage.Format.Exception: Could not load file or assembly.... Public token=....... expected to contain an assembly manifest..... WRN: Assembly binding logging is turned OFF...." (see photograph) This is a brand new Eee PC netbook straight out of the box with no software loaded apart from the operating system. Can anyone advise please. How do we load the VMC software and get the modem to work....?
Help - all advice appreciated.
Thank You

Hi karenlw and welcome to the eForum

Thanks for your post here. I can completely appreciate how frustrating this must be for you and understand how eager you are to get this resolved.

The error message doesn't sound good, especially for a brand new netbook. :( So the best thing to do here would be to download the full version of the software. If there are any instances of the Vodafone mobile connect software , uninstall them. Then head over to - Vodafone Mobile Connect and download the latest version.

If you do not have any other internet connection you will need to download it on another machine and transfer the file via USB memory stick.

Please give this a try and if you have any further questions we'll be happy to help you

Thanks

Wayne

First can you check if the dongle works on other systems?
From above errors I'd guess their is a problem with the software loaded on the dongle's flash memory in which
case a replacement dongle would be best option. Otherwise you would need to put VMC onto another
memory stick and install from that.

Hi Wayne

Thank you for your advice. I have just downloaded and installed the latest version 9.4.6.20529 RC9 from your link. It seemed to be installing but then on rebooting, I had exactly the same error message once again. I have used the vodafone dongle on a PC without any problems so this does not appear to be the issue.

I have no idea what the error message means or relates to. I a not experienced or competent at registry editing but had a look at the registry entries but couldn't find the line 'HKLM.... Fusion!EnableLog....' so couldn't even follow the instructions relating to enabling 'bind failure logging' (whatever this is...?!).

I have also contacted Asus who haven't been able to help - despite this being a brand new netbook straight out of the box bought solely to provide mobile internet access...

Any advice would be appreciated....

Thank You

Hi David

Thanks for your advice. The dongle works on my PC but as a test I've copied the software from this onto a memory stick and tried installing from that - with the same result. I've also downloaded the latest version direct from the vodafone site and had exactly the same result with this latest version so it looks as though the problem is with the Asus netbook not the vodafone software.

Asus don't seem able to help, I don't understand the error messages so I feel a bit stuck. If you have any further ideas, please do share because at the moment, the brand new netbook bought solely for mobile internet access, is unusable!

Thank you.

I had massive corruption on my EEEPC-900 but couldn't manage to get ASUS to accept return
for repair so eventually reformatted the SSD and reinstalled (supplied with Xandros and reinstalled
with Ubuntu+NetBSD). It's been ok since with much more usage after than before the problem, so
I'm suspecting image on SSD only occupied lower part of the memory and remainder I was trying to
use had never been formatted.

Have you tried installing any other software of similar size? I only boot XP for testing but have it
on a few different systems and all install and run VMC from my k3520. Other possibility is to
download Huawei Mobile Partner - I'm not sure if this is correct link, I've tried Orange Mobile
Partner and that is ok with a profile set for my k3520.

Hi karenlw

I'm really interested in this error as it's a new one on me.

I've spoken to our Modem specialist who suspects there might be an issue with your laptop and .net framework.

We need to find out some information:

  • What service pack are you currently running?
  • Is this a 32bit or a 64 bit version of XP?

As a first step troubleshooting I would suggest following this:

- Clean Boot:

To Apply “Clean Boot” on Windows XP:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. In the Run window, type following text:

msconfig

3. Click OK.

The System Configuration Utility appears.

4. Click the General tab.

Click on Selective Startup and make sure that "Load System Services" is the only item checked.

(You will be unable to unselect "Use Original BOOT.INI." This is OK).

5. Click the Services tab.

6. Select Hide all Microsoft Services.

Warning Do not skip this step. You must hide the Microsoft Services before you go on to step 7.

7. Clear all the services that are still displayed on the Services tab.

8. Click Apply > OK.

9. Click Restart.

If error is cleared then indicates a conflict with another service or application running on the machine. This will require enabling each service/application one by one and retesting to find the service/application at fault.

Note: When you have completed your troubleshooting, follow the steps in the next section to configure Windows to perform a Normal startup.

To Reverse Clean Boot:

Restore your computer to its original settings

1. Rerun MSConfig utility as detailed above

2. On the general tab click Normal Startup.

3. Click OK.

4. Click Restart.

If this doesn't fix the problem, we really would need to get some MS logs from your PC, to prepare msinfo32 logs:

  • Go to Start Menu
  • Type msinfo32 in the search bar and hit return to open the System
  • Configuration Utility
  • Select File and Export
Enter a file name and save the file

I've just sent you an email to your registered address, if after completing a Clean Boot, you still have problems, please reply and attach this log so we can try to help further.

All the best

Thank you for all your suggestions.

I performed the 'clean boot' which then took more than an hour to reboot and showed 100% CPU usage even though nothing was running!

Eventually I gave up with trying to isolate where any conflict might have been and tried to reinstall Windows XP from a good disc. This failed and froze after 5 hours - the last 3 hours of doing nothing at all.

Next, on the advice of Asus, I tried a system restore from the image disc supplied. This also failed due to a series of bad sector errors and it's now asking me to insert 'diskette 434'. I think I have to conclude that I've been sold a dud so now I'm hoping for either a new replacement from Asus or a refund from the retailer.

Thanks to all who've offered help and advice which has been much appreciated - thanks also for the private emails from vodafone's technical support. I'll let you know the eventual outcome.

Karen
