Can't Send/receive Email Or Access Some Sites

Hi,

I've happily been using my USB broadband dongle for about 6 weeks with no issues whatsoever. I have an email account with an ISP and I had configured Outlook to send and receive emails via the ISP.

Within the last week, however, I can no longer send or receive emails at all. In addition, I can't seem to access any website over https . If I connect to another wireless network everything works. Only when I use the Vodafone 3G network do I get these problems. I haven't consciously changed any settings recently but I guess I can't rule it out completely.

Does anyone have any idea where to look or what I can try? As I can't send/receive when I'm on the road it's somewhat of a showstopper. My netbook is running Windows XP SP3. My version of Mobile Connect Lite appears to be up to date.

Many thanks,

Simon

I am using outlook to read/send my aol emails using a mobileconnect usb device. All has worked perfectly up until today. I now can only receive emails. I cannot send them, I get a message 554 Transaction Failed each time I send. Can anyone help?

Hi Graham,

There is currently an intermittent problem with our outgoing mail servers (smtp.vodafone.net and send.vodafone.net) and this is most likely what you’ve experienced today.

I know it’s frustrating however I can assure you that our engineers are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. :)

All the best,

Jenny, Many thanks for the swift reply, in fact I am using 'smtp.uk.aol.com' to send mail, which has worked fine to date. It now seems to be working (for how long I don't know), I accessed an aol site called 'image challenge' and typed in the 6-7 characters as per the instructions. Am now able to send emails via outlook . What this means I have no idea, do you know?

Should I be using the vodafone smtp server in my outlook settings, if so, which one?
To recap, I have a free aol screenname and use outlook to send / receive my aol mail. I am using the mobileconnect software and a vodafone 3G usb.

Hope you can shed some light on this for me?
Graham

Extra info for the vodafone team ref my inability to access https sites , i replaced my vodafone data sim temporarily with an o2 voice/data sim and was able to access the https sites with no problem , so the dongle can not be at fault , the only thing left is the vodafone service? thanks Geoff .

All,

As the initiator of this thread, you may be interested to know that I solved this problem on my computer.

I discovered that the Vodafone software had somehow created a second Wireless Network Connection on my Netbook. I disabled this and suddenly everything worked again.

It would be nice to know why this happened but I'm happy that disabling it works and I hope this helps some of the others who have this problem.

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Guys

geoffking39 - Thanks for the update. We'll get back to you as soon as we can.

gjboydell - If you weren't using send.vodafone.net then what Jenny described won't be what was causing you the problem.

As the issue is no longer affecting you I'm not 100% sure what was causing it. It could have been a temproary error with the mail server.

You are absolutley fine to use your AOL mail server with your Outlook and Mobile Broadband and if the connection is working then you won't need to change any settings.

I'm glad you're up and running again!

B-)
