Cannot send texts to one number

I have two PAYG phones (on Vodafone) a Sony K510i and a Vodafone 354. Both have developed a similar problem (at different times).

They were OK from new, but after a while the Sony suddenly became unable to receive texts from a particular number and the 354 cannot sent or receive texts to this same number. They can both call that number ie speech is OK.

On the 354 I have checked that the "Blacklist" feature is off and I have tried to ensure that call blocking is deactivated (although I dont know the default password so I cant request a "global" unblocking). I'm not sure if the Sony has Blacklist/Blocking features. The person I am trying to text is also on Vodafone. 

Has anyone seen this problem before and managed to solve it ?
