I have been trying to charge a new Microsoft Lumia 550 for ove 10 hours.
still not charged , just a message stating getting things ready.

Certainly shouldn't be 10 hours.
Is any charging style icon showing on the phone ?
Are you charging by usb cable and computer or from a wall plug?
It msybe an idea to try another charging cable
Not sure if this affects you > Build 14267.1002: Lumia 550 battery not charging issue

Hi @dairybarn
If you have a new Microsft Lumia 550 phone, as soon as you turn on the phone, it will download the preloaded applications and update to the latest software.
You are probably seeing this message because the phone is getting things ready to update to the latest software.
If you can possibly turn on your WiFi, the update will be done a lot quicker than using the mobile internet. If this is a large update, any data allowance would also be saved.
As soon as the phone has prepared the update and it is ready to instal, you will receive a further message and be able to see the tool sign on the phone screen. Please be aware this is a slow process which cannot be hurried.
If there are any issues with the phone, it will need to be returned to the point of sale but once the phone has downloaded any applications and the software has finished downloaded, you will probably find the phone also fully charged.
Please remember not to let the battery get too low, much better to recharge no lower than 30%.
