Data charges that are unjustified

Hello. I have been charged for data usage twice despite only using wifi to go online on the device, and despite not even turning data on at all. I have put a background data restriction on, and am wondering if this will resolve my problem.

Hi

Welcome to the eForum.

Turning Off 'Mobile Data' in the phones settings would stop all that type of connection to the Mobile Network.

Smartphones use data in the background and if a WiFi Connection dips or breaks a phone will search out the next strongest which could be the Network.

Phones do have features that can restrict connection and some have audible alarms and counters to advise when a certain amount of data has been used.

Some phones have internal data monitors and their are typically downloadable versions from App Stores.

Are you sure the charges are data related ?

Hellos. Thank you for the advice, I'll try everything suggested, although mobile data has always been off since I purchased the phone a few days ago (perhaps I should have mentioned that sooner. Sorry D:).

Also, I am sure the charges are data releated because I have recieved two text mesages from Vodafone saying they have noticed I've been using data, followed by a pricing guide.

Then your phone maybe malfunctioning as turning Mobile Data Off kills network connection.

Do you have a data allowance in your tariff ?

Perhaps contact customer services on 191 or Live Chat to ask them to clarify the costs.

And if you can as a process of elimination put your SIM card in another phone and turn off mobile data to see if that makes a difference.

Hellos. Firstly, I'm unsure if I have a data tariff, although either way I'm not sure if it'll matter seeing as I have only connecting to my phones internet via wifi in my own home and at work.

I spoke to someone today in the Vodafone store who confirmed that I haven't been using data, he then put the taken credit back onto my phone and sent me on my way. Later on I recieved another message charging me for the use of data yet again. I've still yet to switch the data switch on, and have also restricted background data as well as changing all wifi settings to ensure data is never switched on.

As a result of this I'll be phoning the helpline soon, and if they are unable to assist I'll return my phone to the store.

Thank you for all your help, its much appreciated c:

Hi

You're Welcome. 😎

It certainly is a conundrum!

Have you been able to perhaps use your SIM card in another phone as a process of Elimination to help rule out the phone or Sim Card / Account that maybe at fault.

Have you set up an online account yet? You can do it by clicking the Register button at the top of the Vodafone website homepage if not. In your "view bills" section, there's an option to view unbilled usage, which should show you what exactly the charges are for, so you can at least definitively confirm that it is for data (or what it is for if it's not that). The helpline staff would be able to do this for you too if that's easier.
