The N900 should be quite happy being used as a Modem, but the laptop will need the correct AV connectors for the video, or failing that an AV to VGA adapter may work.
Also bear in mind that you'll have extra cabling to struggle with if you go down that route. But you can cut the number down if you use the N900 as a Bluetooth modem, not sure how the batteries would fair up though.

Hi,

thankyou for the reply.

Can you tell me what you mean about the video?

I was thinking you could just use the fone like the dongle with one usb cable then just surf the net?

Is that not as easy as I think???

please excuse my ignorance on fone capabilities

Ha ha. :D Sorry about the video bit. I'd not long got out of bed, so my brain was malfunnythinking, so you can ignore that bit.

All you need is your USB cable or a USB Bluetooth adapter, if your laptop hasn't got Bluetooth built in.

hi vodaq

Thanks to Mick for his assistance. :)

Please be wary of using the handset as a modem. Any data transfer will need to be paid for, unless you have an inclusive internet bundle on your mobile phone plan. Even then you may well run down the 500Mb monthly allowance quite quickly and you may need that for your N900.

If you have a contract USB modem I would recommend sticking to that. You are paying for it after all.

Don't want to get your fishing line tangled up with the usb cable and dropping the whole lot in the keepnet!!

Best wishes

Thanks for the reply,

I would only be using the n900 as a modem for about 4 hrs per month and yes i do have unlimted internet access with my bundle,

the dongle is £15 and lasts till the usage is paid up, just thought it was pointless if i have the phone to use the dongle as well???

I've used three different brands of phone as modems (connected to Macbook Pro via bluetooth). None have been as fast as a dedicated dongle (also on Vodafone).

The other downside (bluetooth or USB cable) is you have to have your phone pretty nearby. With a dongle it doesn't matter.

Hi Clive.

I only use a dongle when I am away carp fishing for 3/4 nights.

The dongle I have is £15 unlimited time ie I only need to pay a top up once the allowance is used up NOT monthly.

I have just upgraded my fone which arrives tomorrow (n900) which can connect to the web and in my package it said unlimited web usage.

So my question was/is is there any point in topping up the dongle once I have used the allowance on the dongle? My thoughts were just a usb cable from the phone to the laptop?

The dongle has to be as close as the phone!

Thanks John
