Dongles

My friend lives in a Rural area of Lanzarote which does not have main telephone cables and is connected to a "Wireless Telephone". The telephone company says they cannot connect him to broadband (ADSL) but can connect him to a "dial-up service". He has been told that this system is very slow. Another friend has advised him to buy a "Dongle". Can anyone tell me if this would give him direct access to the internet. Thanks.

It would providing he gets mobile network coverage in that area. It would be worth checking what type of mobile coverage he gets in that area too. If it is 3g then it would be the best solution for him. If he only gets GPRS coverage it would be similar to dial up so I would compare the relative prices.
