Solution

Sony Vaio P- Series

Hello,

Can someone please tell me how to connect without the usb dongle. I have a pay monthly usb stick and the Sony laptop has a sim card slot and it's not tied to any network. I would like to use the slot instead of having the usb stick "sticking out".

However when I use the Globe Trotter software provided it looks like it requires a username, password and a APN.

Hunting around I have found some people talking about having these as the values required

username: web
password: web
APN: pp.internet

There is also the ability to provide a pin code which I beleive is used if you have locked your own card. I have not so this is set to disabled.

The globe trotter software correctly identifies the sim card as being vodafone UK but when I try and connect I just get a connection failure message.

Has anyone else managed to get this working?

Thanks

In answer to your question, yes I have, on my Sony Vaio P19WN. But, unfortunately, I can't for the life of me remember how!

I know the USB dongle comes with it's own operating software & I know I played with this before I tried sim only, via GlobeTrotter connect.

Once I had it installed, using the dongle, I removed the sim from it & placed it into the Vaio's sim aperture. GlobeTrotter then, as you say, found the sim, recognised VF UK & connected. However, as it doesn't give you outstanding balance info, which being on PAYG I required, I reverted back to using the dongle.

Have you managed to connect using the dongle? Does yours have the software, which you can install from the dongle & then revert back to sim only, once it's installed?

The above, from the VF site, is Vodafone Mobile Connect Software. Try that if the other doesn't work.

Hi DagMiller

The settings you are using to connect to the internet are spot on.

Does the SIM work when it's in the modem?
Try downloading the latest VMC software here - will it now connect?
What's happening when you try?
What happens when you use a dial up connection by going to Start > Connect To > VMC lite > Dial.

As your in-built modem is third party we may not have all the answers - but we'll do everything we can to help.

Hi all and thanks for all your input.

Ok, what worked was the following.

username: web
password: web
APN: internet

Now to the next issue. VMC 9.3 would not see my built in modem at all. So I tried downloading 9.4 this does, but it is so flaky (don't know if this is caused by Vodafone's software or Sony's) I can't connect with it. The Globetrotter software included on my laptop connects fine but of course I can't see my usage.

But I have install NetMeter 1.1.4 (Beta Version).

This seems to provide a filter for just when I'm connected via my 3G modem. So hopefully I can track usage through this.

Hi DagMiller,

I'm really happy to hear this is now working for you! :P

As to the problem with VMC and your internal modem, sadly we cannot ensure that the VMC will always properly work with devices other than our mobile phones and Mobile Broadband range. As we don't have a way to test this I'm not really sure what to suggest, so your workaround may have to be the resolution to this. I can completely understand your situation and it is a shame we can't help you further :(

However, if you do have any other connectivity issues, please feel free to ask! :)

Will it also work with the Top-up and Go dongle's SIM?

Yes.

Mine's a Pay-as-you-go mobile broadband sim.
