Hey Bob Lee,
It's a shame to hear this - the Blue Screen Of Death (
BSOD, as it's affectionately known as) one of the most frustrating aspects of Windows; frustrating enough for me to push me firmly over to OSX territory, at least. It can signify any fatal error, though I am 99.9% confident that this down to your PC - there will be something conflicting with your network setup, or there's some sort of non-recoverable USB/port problem at play... or something else. Have you tried booting with the modem plugged in to begin with? This may or may not do anything, but is worth a try.
The problem we suffer in trying to diagnose anything like this, is that all PC's are different - even down to motherboard components, chips, etc... let alone software versions, or how the hardware affects the software. As we're not Microsoft Accedited, my best advice would be that if this persists, get this looked at by a professional IT / repair tech to see what's going on. There won't be a problem with the modem itself, but you're very welcome to try it in another PC to be sure that this is the case.
Perhaps on of our uber-talented community can shed further light on this?
Please do let us know how you get on, would be ace to hear that you manage to get it working properly again!
