Solution

Eeepc Setup Problems - Can You Help?

HI,

I have an eeepc 1000 running on Linux and have just received a shiny new Vodafone PAYG dongle. First time I plugged it in and an Asus Mobile device dialogue came up. I tried pressing Connect but nothing happened - It didn't connect.

Then I closed that all down and went through Network and set up a new connection with the correct settings. That always failed to connect.

Thenn I went to the Betavine website and downloaded their software via Synaptic. That seemed to go most of the way through the process but somehow never really completed it.

After a reboot the Vodafone icon was visible on the Internet page clicking on that asks me to set up a serial device with some other settings which I cannot supply.

Then I tried going back too the mobile connection in Network and that came up with the following error:

Unable to get device 'modem-mobile::0x0700000x00000x00000x00000x0000' from hardware database. (dialuppppclientservice.cpp: 914)

Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not a techie to plain speaking instructions appreciated.

Bill

Hi,

I have no uninstalled the Betavine software and the device is now visible if you try to set up a new connection. However I get this error message when the device fails to connect:

Modem hangup

APN looks wrong, I think it should be just "pp.internet" for payg.

On my eeepc 900 I took 4hrs with Ubuntu 9.04 last night before I finally gave up.
I had similar chap authentication success and ip connection with local and dns assigned, then connections
died. The k3520 worked ok on 8.10 from Network Manager then initially after upgrade to 9.04 but has become
progressively more unreliable.

I ended up copying /etc/ppp from my NetBSD system, then "pppd call vodafone" came up with error that ttyU0
wasn't a valid device (not a suprise), changed that to ttyUSB0 and this time "pppd call vodafone" connected ok
and downloaded 38MB of updates.

I have now sorted out this problem.

Originally I put a micro sd card into the modem for storage. I tried taking it out, installed Betavine's software and the softwae all installed fine. In fact I am connected now.

So basically if you have an eeepc on Linux with a vodafone dongle - don't put a micro sd card in it.

Good to hear it was that simple.

One of the Ubuntu upgrade/updates zapped my 2GB card in that it was no longer visible, also
now gone on XP (compaq notebook) but still usable from NetBSD.on the same eeepc as I
have Ubuntu 9.04. With NetBSD I need to have the modem plugged in at bootup otherwise
there's a kernel panic (crash) when it is plugged in so there are obviously usb driver issues.

Hi Guys,

I must say in all honesty, there were times in this thread where you had lost me as I struggle with the IP config issues with Linux, but I must thank you as I have learnt something new today with this and I will be sure to have this to hand when dealing with similar issues.

Once again, great that you have it up and running and thank you for teaching me something. ;)

Many thanks

Andrew
