Solution

Email Server Termination

Hi,
I need some help with the email settings on my Vodafone K3565 dongle. I am a freelance sports photographer and use a PAYG Vodafone dongle combined with an IBM Lenovo laptop.
I use Outlook Express to send emails with one picture per email ranging from 500kb to 800kb in size.
I've been using this reasonably successfully since the start of the season, but recently performance has dropped off dramatically.
I can no longer email photos of more than 300kb otherwise the server times out. I've checked my account settings and the timeout is set to 5 mins which it is not currently hitting before the error message is received.
SMTP is send.vodafone.net with Port 25

Any help would be appreciated as I need this working or else I don't work!

Thanks in advance

Try signing up for http://www.vodafone360.com/

So far it doesn't have same problems as send.vodafone.net and is more likely to remain usable
as connections require authentication.

Thanks bacupian.
Ok. I've registered. It asks for an email address. I assume I use the one I normally use as means of emailing the photos?
It also asks for a mobile phone and number, since I'm using a laptop and dongle this isn't relevant. It won't let me bypass the phone, but I've entered the dongle sim number and just selected a blackberry to get past this question.
What else do I need to do to get this operational?

I use myusername@myowndomain same as for when I send email using smtpauth via either my own
mailserver or that of my isp.

If you have SPF setup in your DNS you'd need to add the vodafone360 server to that.

Yep, when asked for mobile phone number I entered the phone number of dongle and lied about make/model
of phone.

Settings needed will depend on your email client and I've only setup for Evolution on Linux.. Some settings
required for Outlook were posted by one of mods on forum a while back. You may need to set port number
to use = 465.

For Evolution, only settings needed are

Identity/Name = vodafone 360 (doesn't matter)
Identity/Full_Name = vodafone 360.com (doesn't matter)
Identity/E-mail_Address = myname@mydomain

Sending_E-mail/Server_Type = SMTP
Sending_E-mail/Server = smtp.360.com
Sending_E-mail/Server_requires_authentication(tick-box) = ticked
Sending_E-mail/Use_Secure_Connection = SSL encryption
Sending_E-mail/Authentication_Type = PLAIN
Sending_E-mail/Username = my 360.com_username
Sending_E-mail/Remember_password(tick-box) = ticked

Whilst connected to Vodafone I then had option to probe for password type and chose the one
not crossed out = PLAIN

First email connection requires 360.com password to be entered which is then remembered or not
depending on the tick box setting.

Above is not restricted to connections via Vodafone, I can use same identity to send email when
connected via wired broadband or Orange mobile.

Hi Red Dog,

The email address and phone details are not neccessary to resolve your issue - the important bit is just to have a username and password for the 360 service itself.

Now that you have this, simply change your SMTP server to smtp.360.com, enable authentication, and put in your 360 username and password.
Leave the rest of your settings as they are, and you should now be able to send successfully :)

Ok. I've set up a new email account on Outlook Express using the following settings.

Incoming mail server is a POP3
incoming mail: mail.btinternet.com
Outgoing Mail: smtp.360.com
Account name: xxxx@btinternet.com
Password: mypassword

Remember password : ticked

Outgoing Mail server:
My server requires authentication: ticked
Settings:
Logon using:
Account name: my 360.com username
Password: my 360.com password
Remember password : ticked
logon using secure password authentication: not ticked

Advanced Settings
Outgoing mail (smtp) 25
This server requires a secure connection : not ticked

Bottom line is that it sends emails ok via 360.com from my home bt hub network but not when I use my vodafone dongle. When I switch off the BT network connection it wont connect to the 360.com server through the vodafone dongle. I've obviously mucked up the settings somewhere. D'oh

Just checked it again through both connections. It does not appear to be able to connect to 360.com through Vodafone Mobile Connect but can connect ok and send emails when operating off my home wireless network. Very strange.
My connection on the vodafone is GPRS rather than 3G this evening unless that has something to do with it.

You should avoid using port 25 so that you bypass the blocklisted vodafone ips. With Evolution the
connection is via port 465 (but that doesn't require setting) and uses secure connection. It's worth trying
both port 465 with secure connection and port 25 with secure connection just to compare the spam scores.
