Full VMB software throws exception on startup

We have a client who has been struggling to make use of a white dongle (sorry, we support them remotely so don't have model details, yet). The system attempts to install the VMC Lite software on insertion of the dongle but doesn't complete.

Consequently, we downloaded the most recent version of the full Vodafone Mobile Broadband software from http://www.business.vodafone.com/site/bus/public/enuk/support/10_productsupport/laptop_connectivity/... [OT]I have to say, the Vodafone site wasn't exactly easy to navigate but the recently revamped site is positively IMPENETRABLE. I had to use Google to locate this download :-(. [/OT]

This installed successfully and the system rebooted. Sadly, a debug trace of an exception is displayed as the software starts, whether by double-clicking the desktop icon, or inserting the dongle. The attached image shows the window that contains the full trace, however, the salient line is: System.TypeInitializatinException: The type initializer for 'Vodafone.Data.Opcos' threw an exception. ---> System.Management.ManagementException: Not Found

The software has been removed and reinstalled with the same results.

The system is a Lenovo ThinkPad T60 with Windows XP Pro SP3.

Any pointers?

Also to mention some of the things I have tried.

- tried uninstalling/installing multiple times

- tries stopping all non-microsoft services before install

- tried installing the latest version of the VMB software (Install doesnt complete ..)

- tried manual dial setup... doesnt seem to work..

I was able to get the software to complete install on my desktop.

But I have not been able to successfully connect ..

Did you try my solution?

Hi rvik2,

You can get the latest version of Vodafone Mobile Broadband software here.

If this doesn’t sort the issue out I’d give Reach-Techsuppo’s suggestion a go.

James

Hi James,

I have tried installing the latest version of the software, and also uninstalling and installing drivers as suggested by Reach-Techsuppo to no avail.

Can you elabrate further on the manual dial up solution that you had mentioned in an earlier post.  When I try this I get a "TCP/IP CP reported error 736: remote computer shut down connection" error ..

I have tried using *99# and *99***1# as the dail in numbers, and web/web, www/www and no user name/passwd amongst other things but get the same error.  Any further pointers on what I could try ?

I am trying to connect from Chennai, India ..

Would you als suggest trying to install an older version of the software (9.4.3) as mentioned earlier in this thread ?

Thanks!

Raj

Ok, Partial success !!

Finally able to get VMB to start after following the WMI repair instructions at:

halibahDOTcom/wordpress/?p=172

Also copied below:

WMI Repair 1. Remove the repository

Windows XP, Vista & 7

open an (elevated) command prompt & run the following commands

net stop winmgmt
ren %windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository Repository1
net start winmgmt

2. Rebuild the Repository

XP: >rundll32 wbemupgd, UpgradeRepository

Server 2003: >rundll32 wbemupgd, RepairWMISetup

Vista/7: >winmgmt  /salvagerepository

Re-register WMI components (If its still not working)

To re-register the WMI components, run the following commands at the (elevated) command prompt:

cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem
for %i in (*.dll) do RegSvr32 -s %i
for %i in (*.exe) do %i /RegServer

Now I am able to start VMB and connect, but not able to get an active internet connection (o bytes being transferred).  Will post the final solution again after I hopefully get it fully working.  In the meantime, if you have any pointers on crossing this final hurdle, please let me know ...

Ok, problem solved!!!! Final reboot fixed everyhting.

FInal solution:  WMI repair as outlined in previous post + reboot, and then Tada ..

So happy now after 2 days of intense frustration !!

Regards,

Raj
