Huawei dongle - error message

I have been using a dongle with no problems. a couple of months ago i got burgled and my laptop was taken but i still have the dongle. last week i got a replacement laptop - an IBM thinkpad running windows 2000 professional.
I CANNOT get the dongle to work. I get a really long error message that mentions corrupted memory. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling using my friends identical dongle and get the same problem so it's not the actual dongle. From what I can see it should work with windows 2000 so what is the problem? the laptop works perfectly otherwise but what good is it if i can't access the web?

Any chance of a screen shot as to the message you have?

What model dongle do you have?

What service pack version of windows 2000 are you running?

Have you tried the modem on another PC? (preferably not running windows 2000)
