Iphone 4 - Not upgrading to IOS8 draining data allowance...alledgedly

I have 1gb of data each month and rarely even come close to using this.  On Monday I received a text saying I only had 50mb left, 20 days into my plan.  I switched off my Mobile Browsing there and then.  On Tuesday I checked my balance online and it said I had over 750mb of data left.  I rang Vodafone who said that it was the correct figure as of 7am that morning and that the text message was probably a mistake.  I switched my Mobile Browsing back on at about 2pm.

This morning (Wednesday) I have checked my usage and it says I only have 350mb left.  There is no way I could have used this much data in such a short period of time.  My phone was on a wifi connection from 6pm and in airplane mode from 10pm last night until 7am this morning.  I probably checked Facebook once and my emails.

I rang Vodafone and spoke to a customer service rep who asked me what phone and software I was on.  I have an iPhone 4 and I'm still on ios7.  He said this was the reason and it was a known problem.  Not being on the latest software can eat up my data allowance.  This all sounds a bit far fetched to me, has anyone else heard of this.

To make matters worse, he then told me that despite my data usage not being my fault and despite Vodafone knowing this was an issue, they still plan to make money out of it by charging me if I go over my allowance limts.

@boardie

We've seen an increase of data usage recently due to some changes within Facebook.

To reduce the amount of data that's being used, please ensure that the videos are not autoplaying (this can be done in your Facebook settings).

I would also disable any location services which aren't in use.

Please ensure that there's no emails which have failed to send and are trying to be resent.

I already do all of the things you suggested but thanks for trying.

With regards to the comment made by the Vodafone employee, would you say that is nonsense?
