I have recently changed from iphone 5 to 6 and can confirm that this problem exists on both phones so not sim card or hardware related.
Both phones work fine but when I go to areas with no signal (there are a few in hampshire where I live) neither phone would/will reconnect to the network at all. Sometimes switching to airplane mode and back will help but mostly I need to turn phone off and on again to get signal back at all. I only notice this problem when I spend some time in an area with no signal it seems.

Hi. Sounds like either a network or coverage problem from what you say. Simon's thread here will advise on next steps. The main one (given you know it's not the SIM or phone) would be to check what the coverage is on the coverage checker. If there should be coverage in this area but no faults are reported follow Simon's instructions for next steps.

1) Does the issue happen in just one location? If so, how far do you have to travel to regain service? It happens anywhere where I spend some time in a place with no signal. I never regain service unless phones are switched off and on again.
2) What is the full postcode (e.g. ST1 1AA) of where the issue occurs? If you don't want this showing on the eForum, add it to your profile here. All over the place
3) Does the issue occur if you try your SIM card in a different phone? It occurs with an Iphone 5 and 6 with different sim cards.
4) What errors are seen or heard when the issue occurs? Seaching and then No service
5) Does this happen on 2G, 3G, 4G or all? All
6) When did you first notice this issue? 2 weeks ago. Before that with iphone 5
7) Is the issue permanent or intermittent? If intermittent, are there certain times of the day when it occurs? Permanent occurs at all times. When I leave area with no signal and renter an area with signal the phones refuse to reconnect. They have to be switched off and on again to get service at all.

Hi @MarkWebb
Please can you check in your network settings that your carrier selection is set to ‘Automatic’?
If it’s set to manual, it’ll take longer to pick up a signal until there’s a network refresh.
Thanks,
Simon

It is set to automatic. However I have tried changing it to manual and then back to auto which sometimes works rather than having to switch off completely. If either of thephones gets "stuck " in this way they stay with no signal for ever. By that I mean I have left them for 24 hrs in a place with full signal without getting a connection before finally resetting.

I'm also seeing this issue with my new iPhone 6. It has the SIM from my old iPhone 5 in it. I have to reboot the phone to get connection again.

Can you confirm that your carrier selection is set ‘Automatic’ in your network settings?
Does it happen in just one place or multiple locations?
Thanks,
Simon

Simon, it has occurred in two different locations.

I'm unable to see if we've received your email as there's no email address to check it with in your eForum profile. Please provide the reference number from the automated response which will appear in the subject line as [#8xxxxxxx].
We'll need to see if a new SIM corrects this.
You can get one from your local store or through Live help.
