K3656 fails to connect - error 619

Hi

I have a K3565 Rev2, USB 3G modem, which works fine under Windows XP.

However, it fails to connect under Windows 7.

I've tried the following:

  • Downloaded and installed the latest VMC software - v9.4.6.20529 (device correctly detected, Vodafone UK 3G network available)
  • Removed/re-added the device as instructed by the error message
  • Checked the firmware version - Help > Diagnostics shows 11.608.10.51.00
  • Worked through the checks specified here.
  • Noticed that in Device Manager > Network Adapters, Vodafone Mobile Broadband Network Adapter (Huawei) is not listed

... Can someone advise how to proceed?

Sorry, the checks I mentioned above were the ones here. My link didn't get copied in somehow.

Hi Chris5gd,

Error 619 usually indicates that the wrong APN is being used by the connection software. This can sometimes be the case if you install the full version of Vodafone Mobile Connect rather than VMC Lite.

To fix this issue, go into Manage Connections in VMC, and create a new custom connection. Put the following settings into the APN tab:

If you're on contract Mobile Broadband:

APN: internet
Username: web
Password: web

For 1GB Pay-as-you-Go Mobile Broadband:

APN: pp.internet
Username: web
Password: web

For 3GB Pay-as-you-Go Mobile Broadband:

APN: ppbundle.internet
Username: web
Password: web

Once created, make this your default connection, and re-test. Let me know if this resolves the problem :)

Thanks for this reply, Jon.

I've tried this, but when I try to connect using the new connection, I just get the "Connecting" message indefinitely. I tried all three of the custom connection settings above, all with the same result.

I did download and install the full version of VMC - not realising that all I needed was VMC Lite.

So I've now downloaded the installer for VMC Lite - VMCLite_3_2_1_156_standard. However, it fails at "Please wait while the wizard searches for the data card", and will go no further.

I'd appreciate some ideas on where to go next!!

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris5gd,

This sounds like it may be a Plug-n-Play issue.

Please run through the troubleshooting steps in the attached guide, which should fix this for you :)

Hi Chris5gd,

Hi, thanks for this. I don't think it is a P&P issue, since if I just plug in the USB stick it does auto-play, giving the option to run the software on it. However, as I'm using Windows 7, the installer itself doesn't run.

I did run through that troubleshooting document, but most of it isn't relevant.

I've now uninstalled all versions of VMC from the laptop, so please could you advise how to get VMC (or VMC lite) installed and the modem working with Windows 7.

Note: when the VMC Lite installer I downloaded starts to run, the opening screen refers to updating "your Dashboard Data Card".

Is this the right installer?

Thanks

Update...

I seem to have solved this myself now. I discovered that today there is a v10 of Vodafone Mobile Broadband software.

Installing this, the problem was initially the same, but setting the APN to pp.internet (which didn't work with v9.4.6) as advised above cured it, and I can now connect.
