Try texting WEB to 40127 to see if Vodafone supports that phone by sending you the set up information.
Edit:
If not then I believe it's the Android Firmware on the phone so try the GeekSquad Serrings paying particular attention to the payg and pay monthly specific settings.
Tap the Menu button
Tap Settings
Tap Wireless and networks or More... (depending on your version of Android)
Tap Mobile Networks
Tap Access point names
Tap the Menu button
Tap New APN
Enter the following data into the onscreen form, without changing any other settings;
Name - Vodafone Internet
APN - internet (PAYG - pp.vodafone.co.uk)
Username - web (PAYG - wap)
Password - web (PAYG - wap)
MMSC - http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy - 212.183.137.12
MMS Port - 8799
Authentication type - PAP
APN type - If given a choice, select internet+mms, if the keyboard appears enter *
(As a check, the image below shows blue text in the fields you should have completed)
Tap the Menu button
Tap Save
Enable the newly-added APN by ensuring the line is ticked, or the radio button is lit by tapping on it
Check the notification bar for 4G, H, 3G, E or G with up and down arrows beside it, which will indicate your connection is working

There have been a couple of threads about the Cubot - use the search facility to find them.
On a general note, that make of phone isn't supported by the network as they don't sell it and therefore there is no guarantee that it'll work with Vodafone.

Yes I read them (Cubot 1). I have used other phones 'not supported' by vodafone in the past, manually entered the settings & they work.
There are a huge range of mobile phones available and the customer should not be 'resticted' to what a company decides to only 'support'. There is not a huge range of mobile phone manufacturers & so the 'innards' are generally the same along with the OS (android 5.1 in this case). Check out spec of Cubot X17 - it should work 🙂
The phone is on sale on amazon.uk, which if not operable (phone calls are fine) within UK should be withdrawn from sale as not fit for purpose (I know another issue 🙂 )
Anyway, spent a few hours on this issue, pity, the phone build quality & finish is excellent! Gonna probably send it back as not 'fit for purpose'

Actually you can take your car to another dealer who will service it 🙂
Whether a phone not on the 'approved' list will work or not could take up pages probably in discussion. Yes, it was a chance I took, given that it is sold on amazon.uk, the reviews were excellent (I did not find anyone in UK who actually had one - maybe I was the first!!), the website shows vodafone as a 4G compatible network, so based on all that info, I bought one - so I did the 'research', just it doesn't seem to work in practice (though I may leave it 'til tomorrow & have another try) as it may be 'user error' 🙂
