Do you need an SD card to perform a software update? (Smart Ultra 6)

Hello,

We have recently purchessed 81 Smart Ultra 6 phones for our buisness most of which have been deployed already, there is a software update that is now avalible, but when the update has downloaded there is a error displayed saying that 'Copy update package to sd card error. Please make sure the SD card have been inserted corectly and enough space' (Yes with that terrible gramma). So an SD card is required, but I was wondering if there is any way of bypassing this and installing the update without an SD card, as most phones havn't got one, so there will a lot more work required.

Thank you for your help

Hi Luke_Page

Ive never needed a SD card when performing a software / firmware update on an Android phone. Enough memory needs to be available in the internal memory of the phone itself in my own experience.

Hi there

Sometimes you do need an SD card as the update package extracts itself to the SD card. When the phone reboots it then looks at the SD card for the update.  Having said that, this is usually the exception and not the rule.

If you're being prompted for an SD card, it would indicate to me that this is one of the cases where you do need an SD card or your internal storage is full.

Android sometimes refers to internal memory as an sd card, which can be confusing (especially if you don't have an external one!).  The Smart range does incorporate external cards into the main memory pool but, if you're not having problems otherwise, it ought to be fine if it's using it for the update process.

I think I'd be inclined to free up as much internal space as possible in case what it's really telling you is that this is too small.   This may involve removing a few large apps if you have any (I don't like moving them to an external card, but you can also do that).   On top of that, before you start the update, clear recent apps and restart the phone.   This will free up as much working memory as possible and should improve the process.

Its not a space issue as most of them have only one or too apps installed, theres at least 8 gb of free space on all of them (Should have mentioned that appologies) Surely you can update without an external SD card tho..

8Gb should be ample.

You could try doing it without the sd card inserted and see what happens.  I'd still do what I suggested to free up resources, though.

I contacted customer support was on hold for 10 mins and then they end the call... great customer service. Theres no need to free up aditional memory because there is no way that more than 8gb is needed for a system update of this size. I'll try an SD card with the devices I still have but i dont have a way of updateing the devices in the further out centers. So there is where we have the problem.

Thank you all for your help so far.
