Mobile Broadband - Data counts even if not connected?

Hello, I am a new mobile broadband pay as you go vodafone's customer.
I have just installed the usb stick in my pc and I successfully connected to the internet.
However I noticed that the MB counter permanently charges me even if I download nothing or even if I don't roam to any website and just have my pc connected to vodafone's net.

I had a T-Mobile 3G connection before I obtain the vodafone one and the counter was counting only when I was downloading something or watching videos, etc.
I thought that it would be the same with vodafone connection , but the counter runs even if I do nothing.

I want to ask if the counter depends on the time that I am connected, so everything works normal with my connection or something works wrong.
If the counter counts while I am just connected to msn messenger I think that I have to return to T-mobile...

I have just found out tha windows automatic update was running.
Everything is OK now.

I'm glad to see that you have managed to get this sorted, it is a common question and is always best to disable the automatic updates to prevent your data from being used quickly.
