Mobile Broadband - Error 504: Gateway Timeout

Hi,

I have Vodafone mobile broadband for about 4 months now and it has just been getting slower and slower.

Because it is so slow, I am now getting the following:

HTTP Error 504: Gateway Timeout
The server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not receive a timely response from the upstream server it accessed in attempting to complete the request.

This message keeps appearing when I go onto the Vodafone website to buy a new phone. I'm able to access the Vodafone homepage (takes an age though) and then when I click on 'Mobile Phones and Plans' the above message keeps appearing. I've been trying this since last night and it just won't work.

Also, since last night my broadband has been REALLY slow and the light on the dongle is constantly switching between light blue (3G+) and dark blue (3G). I've tried switching to just using GPRS connection but it's still very very slow. I'm assuming there's a connection between the two problems.

Some sites work ok for a bit then slow down to nothing which is making it almost impossible to do anything for more than a few minutes.

What do I do?

Sounds as tho its a mast issue where the signal isnt clear enough. Is i possible to try popping the sim a mobile that will take voda sim and access the internet there first switch back off and retest in dongle this should update the connection to the sim and make it more stable, if then it goes from fast to slow it could be the above, an issue with the dongle or the sim breaking down.

If it's Vodafone sites being slow it's probably the analytics taking too long

Assuming you are on Windows 7 or Vista and Internet Explorer...

Close Internet Explore
Open Notepad as administrator

Find the HOSTS file (in Win7/Vista it's C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts if you are on another windows Google it)

Most if not all of the lines will have # in front

Add the following 2 lines to the bottom of the file (without # in front)

127.0.0.1 www.surveymonkey.com
127.0.0.1 analytics.vodafone.co.uk

with at least one space between 127.0.0.1 and the next part, and save the file. If it doesn't allow you to save then you have not run Notepad as administrator.

Then try the site again.

Let us know if it works.Bear in mind some of the VF links are broken anyway.

Hi Mike.flan and welcome to the eForum

Well there have certainly been some good responses already, thanks to Welshrosco and Jarviser, :)

Please provide an update to the above, we'll continue posting answers and helping where we can.

Thanks

I received a WAP Push message from my local bus company containing a link to some software to allow me to purchase my tickets using my phone. However, every time I try to use the link, I get the 'HTTP Error 504: Gateway Timeout' message (full text below). This is just using the phone's browser and not via a PC. The phone is a Blackberry Pearl 8100 and I have a good, consistent GPRS signal.

I'd really like to get this application installed and need a resolution to the timeout problem.

Full message text:-

HTTP Error 504: Gateway Timeout

The gateway timed-out while waiting for a response from the server. Please try loading a different page. Contact your service provider if this problem persists.

Hi FelimDoyle.

This could be an issue with the data service in this area. Have you tried this in a different location?

It may also help to connect via WiFi, if possible, to see if this allows access. We have an active thread with a similar issue, and there's a possible work around listed there, which should allow you to access this link.

Let me know how you get on.

Regards
