There must be something amiss here! I've just had a look at the postcode on your profile (I'm assuming you're right by the reservoir?) and you do have excellent 2G coverage there and good 3G coverage. So I would expect no problems at all.
Which phone did you go for and where did you get it from? What signal are you getting at the moment, is it saying 3G? It might be worth changing the settings and setting to it to 2G if that is the case just to run a few tests. Also, if you have an old phone trying putting your Vodafone SIM into it and testing the signal again. This will help rule out whether there is a fault either with the SIM or the phone too.
