Mobile Broadband Suddenly Stopped Working On Macbook

Clifton
Not applicable
Hi,

Like a few others, my mbb suddenly stopped working (K3760 stick) recently. Nothing had changed from the previous session.
Always get 'No data card or modem found' now.

Did an uninstall and fresh install from supplied disc but just get the above message again afterwards.

Noticed there was no new modem definition or the 'Other - MMHS' modem script after the fresh install.
Are some items still needed from the USB P&P stick when you install from disc ?
Had a replacement modem 4 weeks ago which is not 'plug & play' version.

For last few weeks the VMC application wouldn't open either (just bounced and needed forcing off), but the internet connection stayed working so I carried on.

Please help, losing work time here !

BTW updated Mac to OSX 10.5.7. recently but Vodafone mbb was working for a week after that.

Hi Clifton and welcome to the eForum,

Although I don't know the answer this one I just thought I'd let you know that your query has been logged and one of my colleagues will be with you tomorrow.

Many thanks,

Hi Clifton and welcome to our Eforum community! :)

Apologies for it having taken this long to get back to you, we're extremely busy at present, but every query is important to us.

Can you clarify a few things for me please? when you plug the modem in, in addition to getting the message no data card or modem found in the VMC lite software, does your system tray pop up with a bubble, indicating that the modem is plugged in? do any of the lights flash on the modem when it is plugged in?

Im sure this can be sorted out, as the modem has been changed, I suspect this may either be a problem with the sim or possibly your computer but I cant be sure until I receive more info from you.

Can you let me know please?

Thanks for the reply. Got a solution.

Light on the USB stick (black 3760 pro) flashed when plugged in but not every time and it was fast and erratic; thought it seemed different but didn't know what if any error this implied.
My Mac System Profiler could recognise it as 'Globe Trotter HSUPA modem' when plugged in, so modem looked OK.
Voda confirmed there was no signal problem in my area and my account was active.

After much investigation and testing I went to the Apple store and they checked my USB ports were fine and thought it very unlikely to be OSX software.
Went to a Vodafone shop and they let me test with a new modem out of the box. It worked ! So had a solution at least.

But of course even though its a Vodafone shop they couldn't swap it there and get me going... no no. Because it was bought on the internet !
After a long time on 'phone to support (while in Vodafone shop) they agreed to send an exchange USB via courrier.

Got it just now, very efficient by Voda tech. support, thanks, but still a week lost of work (have no home broadband) and several days of my time running around trying to figure it out.

Must say Vodafone telephone help people were very, er, helpful at all times and quick to answer.

So, seems that modem light flashing does not mean its OK and that software is at fault;
even if your system profiler can 'see' the modem, it doesn't mean its working;
K3760 modems can fail in very short time even if treated with kid gloves. This one was just 4 weeks;
install of software from disc probably does not install everything ? Modem definition and scripts come from the USB when its plugged in afterwards ???;
fresh installs not loading all items was confusing.
If things are pointing to software / computer faults, try a physical modem/SIM test first anyway at your friendly Vodafone shop.

Cheers.
