Mobile Phone Modems

Although I have internet access on my phone, I find browsing the web on the small screen of my mobile tedious and unrewarding in the extreme. Is there anyway I can view the pages on a laptop screen without taking out a new ISP account, buying a dongle and a SIM card or paying addition subscriptions.
My phone can function with my laptop as a modem but I have been warned that I will be charged extortionate amounts of money by Vodafone if I use it that way.
Can someone clarify please?

3GB will cost £15
5GB will cost £25

These are a add-on to your phone contract and mean you can use data on your phone and as a modem on a laptop.

I added the 3GB one whilst i was in a hotel for a few days and it worked great!. Just call 191 to add 'Mobile Broadband via the Phone' and choose a package either 3GB or 5GB

Can be taken off anytime you want too.

Which phone are you using?

Hi Tojiero,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the eForum family, it's always good to see new faces on here :)

Glad to hear you're thinking of using your phone as a modem, this is an excellent way to connect to the internet that is not as expensive as you may think.

getti has hit the nail on the head with this one (Thanks getti:)). More details on what he has advised can be found on our Mobile Broadband Via The Phone page. I'd certainly recommend checking this one out. You don't even need to contact 191 as we can add it for you. I've sent an email to you, if you respond then we'll be in touch as soon as we can.

Hi -

If your phone has WiFi (e.g. Nokia N95 or N96 and many others) then you can use software called JoikuSpot to make a WiFi hotspot using your phone, and because your PHONE is accessing the internet, not your computer using the phone as a modem, your phone service provider can't tell that you are using a computer, and so it comes under your normal phone internet package.
There is also other software that does it - search for WalkingHotSpot
Search on Google for mobile wifi hotspot.
The only down side is that your mobile battery gets used quite quickly if used for long periods.

Thanks for the response (and Getti).
I guess the answer to my question is no then. I have to pay another £15/month min. to use the internet with my mobile just to see it on a readable screen. Do I really need to subscribe to another service that nearly doubles my line rental. It's too much money for something I will only use once in a while in an emergency or on the road. I'm already paying £25/month for my (normal use) cable broadband at home, but I don't seem to be able to use my 'modem' to access that either.

Hi Siddie,
Thanks for getting back. I'm not sure I understand this one. Are you saying that the phone accesses the internet and then WiFi's it to the laptop? That sounds promising. Unfortunately my phone has Bluetooth but no WiFi that I can see and my Laptop has WiFi but no Bluetooth. Can I not do the same thing but just use a cable?

Yes, I am saying that your phone accesses the internet and wi-fi's it to the laptop.
Sorry, but this system only works over wi-fi, not bluetooth.
I don't know if there is one that works over bluetooth - I think that will then register as you using your phone as a modem, and so more data charges from your provider. The same applies if you use a cable. WiFi sharing is invisible to your provider.

I have my Vodafone dongle, but for emergencies when I don't have a network I can use my Nokia N95 (on a different network, Vodafone Mods will be glad to hear!) to access the internet - often the network speed doing this is much faster than using my Vodafone dongle! Also once you have this system set up on your phone, you can share the network connection amongst many people via WiFi, and it is platform/OS independent.

But it does use your phone battery very quickly!!!
