Please ensure the mobile broadband device you're using has the latest software.
You may need to use an alternative connection as seen in an earlier post.

Can I update the software on the dongle? Or can I take it back to the shop and swap it for a new one?

I have downloaded the latest software for my mac.
Are you saying that I can put new software on the dongle?
Please explain properly.

You'll need to make sure you have the latest software on the dongle, as well as your MAC.
Once you've done so, this should resolve the issue as was the case in the other thread DaveCD linked to in his post.
