Persistent RAS770 on K3772

Hi Vodafone,

I recently bought a new 3G dongle since the old one broke. It is a K3772 and persistently gives RAS770 error and fails to connect.

I reinstalled the softwae twice with any available updates too. There is nothing which matches this problem on any previous forum postings. I do NOT have any kind of internal modem.

* I tried with and without my ethernet/ADSL plugged in.

* Tried clearing out anything remotely VodaFone from the registry then reinstalling

* I tried with the WiFi switched on and off.

* I tried in a different physical location (different 3G cell)

With the previous dongle I had a different RAS error. No help from Vodafone came to anything. In the end it was a profile problem, the only solution to generate a new profile and move everything over from my old one. System Windows 7 32-bit. PC Samsung laptop Q320.

So a challenge then Vodafone (or anyone else on forum). Any solutions?? Otherwise the dongle goes back to the shop and I go with O2 !!

Thanks,

Rob.

Hi James Cured it. It is a configuration problem with VMB. Clearing out EVERYTHING related to the dongle in all profiles, then reinstalling fixed it. You have the record for the longest and most detailed reply to a posting..! ~Rob

Hi Rob,

Please can you try the following and let me know how you get on

  • Unplug the device and close the VMC software.
  • Go to “Phone and Modems” option in control panel, and remove all Globetrotter entries.
  • Plug the device in and allow this to finish installing.
  • Go to “Device manager” and Disable the onboard modem (if present) then disable the Globetrotter entry under “Network adapters”.
  • Go to Network sharing centre and select Manage Network connections on the left hand side of screen, remove VMC dialup if present.
  • Unplug the device and open VMC.
  • Delete any Globetrotter entries from manage devices, click Apply then Ok and then and close VMC.
  • Plug the device in and open VMC.
  • Once the device has been detected by the software go to Manage devices. At this stage you may only see an Application interface this will be ok as long as it is showing ticked as default and active. On the other hand you may see the two entries, if this is the case you will need to make sure that the modem interface is the one ticked as default and showing active.
  • Go back to main view and click Connect to test the connection.

James

OK James, Well my laptop has absolutely no other modem installed - it has only ever been used with a hardwired ethernet cable and the 3G dongle. I know you have given me the stock reply there, as similar has been mentioned in rlation to this error code before. I am doing a manual clean-up of my computer including old profiles and the registry. The I will re-install the 3G dongle software from a clean sheet. Wil get back here when done... ~Rob

 Hi Rob,

RAS 770 is a generic failure in the context of Vodafone Mobile Broadband (VMB), so the error itself doesn't identify a specific failure.

From what you've mentioned it sounds like the K3772 is detected and seen by the VMB software. Your connect button would be greyed out and you'd get a "no device detected" message if there was some kind of driver installation or device detection issue.

Because of the generic nature of the error message it's probably best to take a couple of steps to identify where the issue lies.

Ruling out settings/configuration:

As a matter of course it would be a good idea to check that the VMB software is configured to correct to the correct APN. If you're running VMB 10.X.X (which I would guess you are given that you have a recent model of dongle) this can be done by:
- Opening VMB
- Clicking the advanced button (if you're not already in advanced view)
- Click the priorities tab
- Highlight Mobile Connection, then click the V in the circle in the bottom right hand corner of the Mobile Connection section
- Click the settings button to the right of "Vodafone UK" and a new dialogue box will open
- In the settings name field type VFUK, then click the Network tab
- In the Edit APN (Access Point Name) field type on of the following:
internet (if you are a contract/pay monthly customer)
smart (if you're a pay as you go customer on a £5 for 250MB lasting up to 30days plan)
pp.internet (if you're a pay as you go customer on a £15 for 1GB, lasting up to 90 days plan)
ppbundle.internet (if you're a pay as you go customer on a £15 for 2GB lasting up to 30 days plan)
- In all cases the username and password are both: web
- Click OK
- Make sure the radio button is next to the settings profile you just created (VFUK)
- Click the status tab and retest the connection.

If at this point you're still getting RAS 770 then it's possible that another application is polling the port or occupying a resource that VMB and the K3772 need to use to establish a connection.

Ruling out conflicting applications:

If you are running the full version of VMB (i.e. obtained form a download, rather than installed from the K3772 itself) then there is a built in application conflict manager that can be enabled to manage applications that may interfere with VMB. The application conflict manager can be accessed by clicking the round red icon with a picture of a laptop and a globe on it in the top left hand corner of the VMB dashboard (you need to be in advanced view for this button to be visible), then clicking "options" then "application conflicts". Tick the "manage application conflicts". Select autoresolve to enable the application conflict manager.

If you don't have the full version of VMB, or the steps above don't resolve your issue then you might try a selective start up to establish if it is another application that's conflicting. This can be done by:
- Click Start Menu, and type msconfig in the search bar, then press return. The System Configuration Utility appears.
- Ensure the General tab is selected.
- Click on Selective Start-up and make sure that "Load System Services" is the only item checked. (You will be unable to unselect "Use Original BOOT.INI." This is OK).
- Click the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft Services. Do not skip this step. You must hide the Microsoft Services before you go on to step 7.
- Clear all the services that are still displayed on the Services tab by selecting “Disable All”.
- Click Apply, click OK, Click Restart.
- Retest the VMB connection

If this works then it's another application installed on the PC that's conflicting with VMB.

If the connection is still failing then it's worth ruling out the VMB dashboard itself as the point of failure, by trying to establish a network adapter orientated connection:

- Make sure the selective start up (detailed above) has been applied
- Access the task manager
- Click the processes tab
- End any process that mentions "Mobile Broadband" or start with "VMB" or "VMC"
- Open the control panel, double click "network and sharing centre", click "change adapter settings", right click on "Mobile Broadband Connection", click "Connect/Disconnect" and a dialogue box should pop up in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
- In the dialogue box that has just appeared right click on "Mobile Broadband Connection - Vodafone UK" then click "properties"
- In the Vodafone UK Mobile Broadband Properties click the profile tab. in the APN field enter one of the following:
internet (if you are a contract/pay monthly customer)
smart (if you're a pay as you go customer on a £5 for 250MB lasting up to 30days plan)
pp.internet (if you're a pay as you go customer on a £15 for 1GB, lasting up to 90 days plan)
ppbundle.internet (if you're a pay as you go customer on a £15 for 2GB lasting up to 30 days plan)
- In all cases the username and password are both: web
- Retest the connection by right clicking the "Mobile Broadband Connection - Vodafone UK" connection and then clicking connect (you might need to right click the "Mobile Broadband Connection" and select properties in the change adapter settings you accessed via the control panel > change adapter settings to redisplay the required dialogue box).

If this works when connecting via VMB failed (in selective start up mode), then it's looking like the issue lies with the VMB software. Taking the PC out of selective start up mode, then retesting using the method directly above may also be worth trying, if this test fails then another application is trying to use the VMB network adapter (or associated resource, if the connection is still successful then your issue is more likely to be related to the VMB software itself.

If you've identified a conflicting application that isn't handled by the application conflict manager (available in full, downloadable VMB only, not included in an off-the-device installation) then you'd have to go into some investigation to find out what's causing the problem. Repeating the selective start up process, but leaving one more service enabled each time and retesting the connection upon each reboot is lengthy, but it will identify the application causing the problem.

If you've identified an issue with the VMB software (i.e. the network adapter orientated connection works regardless of selective start up mode being used or not) then it may be worth uninstalling VMB then reinstalling it when in selective start up mode. Failing that you could try downloading the full version of VMB. Version 10.3.203 can be downloaded from this page .

It's also possible that you're getting RAS 770 for another reason involving your setup, or for a reason for external to your system. If this is the case all of what I've mentioned above may not apply. To work out where things are failing (if the above doesn't help) then the information that would be handy to know would be:

- The light status of the K3772 prior to connection attempt

- The light status of the K3772 during connection attempt

- The location in which you're having issue

- Are issues experienced in multiple locations?

- The signal strength displayed in the VMB software

I hope that helps.
