Hi,

I have been having trouble installing and connecting to the internet via my new usb stick. I installed it on my Toshiba Satellite laptop after experiencing lots of trouble finally got it there and I now have 'ras error 633'

The other problem is it causes a very long shutdown on the laptop i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and sometimes it has actually caused the computer to remove it. I have vista on this computer. The stick works on my Acer laptop (with XP)

Pease help I am almost at the end of my sanity..... been trying since July this year

Hi there LYNIJOE

Welcome to the wonderful world of the eForum! :D

The 633 error messgae usually indicates that something else is attempting to use the port that the modem is in, are you able to try this in another port?

If you can uninstall the VMC software, reboot your laptop and then try installing it again you may find that this has helped.

You can also check the network and modem settings on your laptop as it may be the laptop thinks another programme is using the port. :)

Let us know how you get on, I'm confident we'll get you up and running again! ;)

Hi Helen,

Thanks for the quick reply, I have done this all before and had no luck, several times in fact. I have spoken to tech support by phone and got nowhere the most recent time was for over an hour, it seemed the person i spoke to did not really have any idea what to do.

I assume you feel that the usb stick is ok for vista then.. is that right, i have noticed on the internet that people have mentioned adding an upgrade to the modem itself for vista 32 bit and that there is one coming for 64 bit vista......

Please i really hope we can fix this, it is not fair that i have had so many problems it has taken over too much of my time recently ...trying different things

Hi Lynijoe,

I have to admit I'm a little stumped as to what is causing the error with your dongle but would you mind confirming if you are running the 32-bit version of Vista or the 64-bit? The 64-bit version is a little rare on most domestic computers but if you right-click on My Computer and click Properties this will bring up information about your version of Vista.

Keep me posted on this and we'll do our best to help you out :)

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

Yes my Vista is 64 bit I remember when i first got it i had the option of choosing 32 or 64 as i was starting it up and hoped it was the best option to choose 64 bit. It is a Toshiba Satellite.

Windows Vista Home Premium .. service pack 1.

Procesor Intel Core 2 Dup CPU T6400 @2.00GHz 2.00 GHz

I am so disappointed that i have not been able to use my Vodafone internet.

Hi LYNIJOE,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing difficulties. As you've mentioned that the device works fine on another laptop then I'd definitely say there is something on your Vista laptop that does not want to work with the modem. I've got a few suggestions for you try. Do bear in mind I'm not microsoft certified so everything I'm suggesting here only relates to Vodafone software.

Have you tried connecting using a dial up connection? This effectively bypasses the VMC software which may be conflicting with another piece of software on the computer. To do this go to close the VMC software by going to File > Close then go to Start > Connect To > Choose VMC > Press connect.

If this fails then I'd recommend you remove any of the Vodafone modem drivers and then add it back on again. This can be done as follows:

Firstly, ensure the modem is plugged in then go to start > Control Panel > Choose Double click phone and modem options. If you can't see phone and modem options then you may need to click on Classic view at the rop left.

Click on the Modems tab at the top (you may be asked for location information, if so simply enter your area dialling code and then press OK).

You should see a list of all the available modem drivers attached to the PC. The Vodafone ones will be listed as Huwaei, if you've got multiple ones then the software may be confused as to which one it is connecting with. Simply remove them all (Leave any modems that show as attached to a COM port, anything else showing as not connected can also be removed.)

Once this is done you will need to click on Add, then choose that you want windows to search for the modem automatically, this will re-install the modem driver, it should show as being connected to a COM port.

After this is done, try connecting with the VMC software again.

If that fails then I would recommend creating a manual connection through which to connect to the internet. This can be done as follows.

Go back into phone and modems using the steps above.

Highlight the Huwaei modem and then click properties.

In the properties window click on change settings.

Once this is done then click on the advanced tab.

It will ask for an extra initialisation command, type in at+cgdcont=1,"IP","pp.internet" and then press OK.

Press OK again to leave phone and modem options and then go back to the Control Panel and double click on network and sharing centre.

Click on setup a connection or network.

Choose Connect to the internet > No, I will setup my connection manually > dial up connection

When it asks which modem you want to use make sure that the Huwaei modem is the only one selected.

It will then ask you for some details, you need to enter as follows:

telephone number:*99#

Username:web

Password:web

Connection name:Vodafone

If you then choose create this connection it will do a connectivity test, which if successful will connect you to the internet.

In future you would then need to connect by going to Start > Connect to > Vodafone.

Phew! I feel exhausted now ;) . I know that's quite a lot to take in but trust me it's not as complicated as it looks.. Give that a try and let me know how you get on.
