Solution

Ras 720 With E172

Hi, I've been succesfully using the mobile broadband with the USB modem E172 for 3/4 months but a few days ago it stopped working and now I can't connect anymore.
This is the error message that I'm getting with Vodafone Mobile Connect:

Mobile connection not possible.

- Set your current mobile device as the default
device in the 'Manage Devices' view
- Ensure that no other programs are using your
mobile device and try again in a short while
- Delete the device in the 'Manage Devices' view,
add it back again, and then try connecting.

If this error persists, please contact Support
at your mobile network operator.

Support information:
RAS error code 720

This used to work before on the same laptop (T60 Thinkpad with Windows XP).
Any suggestion on what the problem could be?

Just caught up with your progress on this but great to hear that one of the suggested fixes got you up and running. You are very welcome.

Well, after all I still have some problems...

The vodafone mobile internet is working, but today I could not sincronize my windows mobile 6.1 based pda with the PC any more. The pda gets connected via activesync, but it does not sincronize.

I've uninstalled the activesync and reinstalled activesync 4.5, and the problem with the pda was solved.

But guess what... Later I've tryed to connect to mobile internet, and... error 720 again.

Used RAREPAIR again and the vodafone mobile internet is OK, but the sincronization with the pda is down once more.

I read something similar somewhere (not sure if in this forum)...

Guess what. I've had the problem exactly like this but still having the issue. Yesterday I couldnt sync with my PDA so reinstall activesync. Am using IBM and upgraded the active connections afterwards.
Now afterspending hours uninstalled all the app and followed the step-by-step procedure to reinstall the wan miniport. still couldnt connect. it's still giving me an error. :(

Activesync can be a bit of a pain.
It needs to be able to establuisha connection to the internet so ensure it is allowed access to the net through AV / Firewall packages.
Another trick I used to apply was to make sure that I had no live internet session at all, Activesync seemed to ignore the need to use the internet if it was not seen as something that was available and would 99% of the time succeed.

Komatinemi:

Active connections upgrade afterwards.
Do you mean Access Connections software by ThinkVantage that comes pre installed on IBM machines??

If so, I am massively suspicious that this is the actual cause of the corruption to the TCP/IP stack in the first place on IBM machines.
Now that you have carried out the update, try the procedure again and let me know what happens.

Hi nj05,

Can you try deleting the partnership between your phone and PC for me (this can be done from the menu in ActiveSync on the PC), reboot, and then plug your handset in again?
It should start up the sync wizard again, recreate the partnership, and after that hopefully it will sync as normal. I've had a few Windows Mobile Devices stop syncing in the past, and this has usually resolved the issue. :)

Yes, that's correct. It's the ThinkVantage access connections. To be precise I upgraded from version 5.00 to 5.02 and this is the only upgrade I've done to my system other than reinstalling activesync.
I am planning to do it during lunch hour and post an update.

thanks

Cool, I await with my fingers crossed !!

Remember, once having worked through the procedure, the first dial attempt will realign all of the servces and driver for dial up networking so will probably fail but hopefully, subsequent attempts thereafter should be the ones that get you the connection.
If you are really lucky, the first attempt will be successful but this is rare.

OK, Let's try to explain what I've done...

In my previous post, I said that I had unistalled Activesync (not sure what version had installed) and reinstalled Activesync 4.5. I already mentioned the problems occured after that.

In the end I had mobile internet working, but the PC not sincronizing with the pda.

What I´ve done now:

- Deleted the activesync partnership between the pc and the pda

- Rebooted the PC

- Connected the pda and tryed to reconnect with activesync. NO SUCCESS, and all the contacts in the pda were lost.

- Executed the activesync 4.5 setup file, and choosed the option to REPAIR

- After the configuration, connected the pda to PC. It connected and syncronized correctly this time.

- After that, unplugged the usb pda cable, and inserted the vodafone pen.

- The first time I tryed the connection in the vodafone software, I got the 720 error.

- TRYED A SECOND TIME AND IT CONNECTED CORRECTLY!

After that, disconnected the vodafone pen and tryed the pda again, and all OK for now.

Some details:
- I kept the computer connected to LAN all the time with internet access
- PC Toshiba Tecra A9 with XP Professional
- PDA HTC P3600 with WM6.1 rom

Thank you for everything.

it's working fine. not in the first attempt but in 2nd. Anyway the problem solved.

Thanks a lot for all the help. You guys are great..

@vodabusiness

Now time to go and ask the IBM (err) Lenovo on this. Quite sure it's due to the active connections as my colleague who just upgraded to 5.2 failed to connect. Now he is trying to do the same as given here.
