Solution

Ras 720 With E172

Hi, I've been succesfully using the mobile broadband with the USB modem E172 for 3/4 months but a few days ago it stopped working and now I can't connect anymore.
This is the error message that I'm getting with Vodafone Mobile Connect:

Mobile connection not possible.

- Set your current mobile device as the default
device in the 'Manage Devices' view
- Ensure that no other programs are using your
mobile device and try again in a short while
- Delete the device in the 'Manage Devices' view,
add it back again, and then try connecting.

If this error persists, please contact Support
at your mobile network operator.

Support information:
RAS error code 720

This used to work before on the same laptop (T60 Thinkpad with Windows XP).
Any suggestion on what the problem could be?

Although I do not work for Vodafone, I do a similar kind of thing independantly and have tried to forge what I have managed to figure out so far to IBM / Lenovo which is very, very slow to progress.
I am however happy that you are up and running and once again this is a great example to suggest that Access Connections updates are possibly responsible for causing problems with dial up connectivity on these machines.

Just like to add that I had this exact same ras 720 problem on my IBM t41 with my new Vodafone PAYG mobile internet dongle , and the instructions given above appear to have fixed it for me, many thanks!!

However, I think their maybe a typo in the original instructions at stage 5, where you have to reset the TCP/IP stack.

The instuctions say to type: 'nest int ip reset resetlog.txt'

I think maybe this should be: 'netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt'

at least this was the case on my computer.

Many thanks again for your help.

Yup, that is my typo so apologies but so glad to hear that this is helping so many people.
Any onlookers please note that this is how to tackle the error with IBM builds with XP and is not necessarily something you will have to go through with various other machines such as a lady on here the other day with a Phillips machine.

I am having the same issue "Error 720" when I try to connect to the Internet.
I have downloaded the latest firmware for the E220 but still the issue exists

I am using a HP Laptop running Vista, this worked fine up to a few weeks ago

Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Hi mackenda

I'm sorry you're having problems with getting this to work. :(

The error that you are receiving does seem to be an error within Windows rather than the modem.

You could try uninstalling and reinstalling the software to see if that makes a difference.

It might be worth speaking to an IT professional if you are stil having difficulties, to get you back up and running. :)

Let us know what happens!

B-)

Not sure if you have a post in another thread about this but you may want to try RAREPAIR but as you can see from this whole stream of responses to the fix I have put here, it is a PC issue, not modem.
Unfortunately in Vista, the lengthy work around for IBM machines on XP is not an option as there is a difference which cannot be avoided and prohibits a certain action from being carried out right towards the end of the process.
What updated on your PC when this happened?

I have a Dell Latitude 410 with XP Pro and I've started getting the 'RSA Error Code 720' message. I've had the dongle for about three weeks and it was working fine until now.

I have just installed AVG antivirus and internet security so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. To be on the safe side I have uninstalled it all, switched off the Windows firewall too. There are no problems in device manager and I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the software. I've tried uninstalling the USB controllers and letting them reinstall. Still getting the same problem though.

I'm quite comfortable with PCs so if there is a solution I can use (like the one for IBMs) please can someone post it here or give me some other direction.

Ok, I have just found this on an MS support page:

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Find out which protocols the RAS server is running, and make sure that the RAS service is installed and configured properly (or ask the Network Administrator to do this).
After you find out which protocols the RAS server is running, make sure that your Windows XP-based computer is running one of the same protocols that the RAS server is running:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
Under Virtual Private Network, right-click the VPN connection, and then click Properties.
In the VPN Connection Properties dialog box, click the Networking tab, and make sure that you have a protocol that the RAS server is running.
If you do not have a protocol that the RAS server is running, add the needed protocol:
Click Install, click Protocol, and then click Add.
Click the protocol that you need to install, and then click OK.
Click Close in the VPN Connection Properties dialog box.

so can someone tell me how I find out which protocols the RAS server is running, and how do I know that the RAS service is installed and configured properly. The MS page is here you want to see the full thing
